Funky & friendly hotel

We were 2 young couples who stayed at the hotel for 6 nights and we found it was very conveniently located, the staff was very friendly and the decor was ideal for a small funky hotel (especially the coffee shop) in the centre of Madrid. Would definitely recommend it to young people, but go for the superior rooms as the standard rooms are very small.

I'm a sucker for interiors and style in less polished areas (yes, there is a lot of graffiti in the area. There's also some interesting clubs, independent design shops, lower prices, and a sense of being in a place where people live, not just tourists). the decor is fabulous though the rooms are a bit small, and all the edges don't quite meet - a bit unfinished. The lounge is a great place to relax on a hot pink sofa and read Vogue while the sweet staff try to fix the free wireless internet that didn't work at all while I stayed there. The cafe where you can buy breakfast is charming and a nice place for locals. Like most Spanish hotels, it's pretty noisy with thin doors meaning you can hear everything going on in the hall. It was calm and funky, though slightly shambolic, and if you can go with the flow in a frivolous way, will probably have fun.

Be careful of your security

I agree with the reviews that state that the staff at the Abalu hotel were friendly; but utmost on my top of priorities, especially when I'm traveling to a foreign country, is security. I have first hand experience of the terrible security at the Abalu Hotel as I was robbed whilst sitting in the coffee shop inside the Hotel!
There are very few people working at the hotel: the receptionist doubles up as the chef, preparing meals etc. Unfortunately, I was targetted by four thieves who were obviously familiar with the hotel; and who could easily discern that there was nobody around. To cut a long story short, they made off with my handbag (which contained all my cash and a great number of other valuables). When he eventually re-surfaced from downstairs (where he was making me a sandwich), the receptionise was absolutely helpless to do anything.
Eventually, we called the police who were pretty nonchalant and didn't think there was much they could do to catch the robbers. In the aftermath, the manager of the Hotel not only failed to offer me any form of compensation, but he avoided meeting me altogether as I had requested, because I had intended to inform him of just how poor the security was. Basically, in the run up to this horrible event (which still affects me to this day), as well as afterwards, the Hotel Abalu handled the whole affair in a very shoddy manner. Nothing in the world could make me stay there again and I want to caution all fellow travellors who are looking to have a positive experience in Madrid.
