My wife Maria and I just got back from our honeymoon while staying at the Field Village. We were incredibly surprised to find that when we arrived in to Chiang Mai at 12:15am that there was someone at the airport waiting to drive us back to the village. Upon arrival, the whole staff was outside waiting for us and happily guided us to our room, which was was filled with flowers, lit candles, and pleasantly cooled down. They brought us fresh fruit shortly after for a snack. You will undoubtedly be pleased with you stay at the Field Village. The Village manager, Aa (mispelled, pronounced like the letter 'A') is always around to assist you. The owner, Jong, is delightfully social and personable. She took us out two nights to hang out with her and her friends at a bar/restaurant, insisted on paying for our drinks, and then drove us back to the Filed Village in her personal car afterward. We had the best time ever, mainly because we felt like were at home at the Field Village. The grounds are beautiful. The hotel is outside of the main city so it's quiet yet not too far. Water bottles (2/day) are provided free of charge. There is an onsight bar/restaurant where breakfast is served free of charge daily. Check the place out, you will not be disappointed.

We stayed in the field village for 1 week in Dec 2007 and it was excellent. We would go back again anytime. The rooms are very nicely done and the whole place is very quiet, relaxing and is surrounded by rice fields. This is really a boutique hotel, and there are a couple drawbacks that you need to be aware of. If you are ok with those, then I strongly recommend this place.
Strengths:
- the hosts are very friendly and can book tours etc for you. I very much recommend the 1 day Mahout Training course in Lampang Elephant Conservation Center - you learn to ride elephants bareback, take them bathing etc. Great fun, especially for kids. Probably was the highlight of our trip. The hotel can book it or you can use active thailand.
- we could stay as a family of 5 in one cabin which was very economical
- the pool is great, the rooms have a great atmosphere
- it has a boutique feeling, if you like that sort of thing (we did).
Drawbacks:
- hotel is about 15min out of town and finding taxis in Chiang mai can be difficult. Hence, you are best off to arrange a taxi to pick you up at a set place and time or you might get stuck (we almost did one evening). Also, count in the extra cost for the taxi fares that you will be paying and you will have to plan a bit more about when to go into town and back since it is a bit more involved than if you were staying right in town. In return, however, you get a very nice and serene place with a lovely view. Hotel restaurant is ok and is good for a couple dinners if you don't want to go out.
- the hotel is on the flight path and it can be quite loud when there are airplanes landing. They don't fly at night, but during the day, about every 20 minutes or so, there is a plane that flies over. The loudness varies from "I can hear the person next to me talk" to "Oh, was that a plane?" - depending on how they fly. It did not bother us because there are not that many planes, but if you think it will, then don't stay at this place.

We were recommended to the Field Village by friends who stayed in the high season. So we were not surprised by the absolute beauty of the place or the incredibly warm welcome we received.
But we knew that there was a high chance of rain travelling in May.
To our surprise it actually improved the stay for us.
Jong was very good at forcasting the daily weather and we hardly missed going anywhere.
But the main surprise came when we realized that
1, We loved tropical rain which is warm and heavy bust usually over within an hour.
2. After the rain the colours and smells are magnificent-so vivid. The mountains in our view sprang out at us
3.There are fewer tourists so no need to book things in advance and everything is cheaper
The Field Village is so well equipped and the catering so good that we often stayed in.
One word of advice we would leave an extra day or two in your programme so that you can see everything and avoid the worst showers
Many thanks to all the wonderful staff who made us feel so welcome that we were sad to leave-we will be back
