Much better than expected.

Just come back from a week at the Chrispy. Only booked the day before, then read reviews which were awful.
Would not have booked if we had seen them first. When we arrived we were expecting the worst.Could not believe how wrong the reviews were. The appartments were lovely, spotlesley clean., sea view. maid came every day to clean and with fresh bed linen and towels. For the price we paid the food was excellent, loads of variety at every meal. It was allways fresh
and hot. There were plenty of drinks served all day, alchoholic drinks, soft drinks, tea, coffee. Snacks were available and ice cream. The Pool was wonderful and close to the drinks and snacks, couldnt have been better. The beach was close to the hotel. The sea was great and full of bathers, the stoney beach didnt stop people from being there. Dont know what these people expected, even the free Greek Dancing night was good. There were plenty of Tavernas near the hotel to have a change of scene. Oh, and everyone working at the hotel were polite and friendly. I would recomend The CHRISPY Hotel its well worth it.

Chrispy Hotel - the jury is still out

We were a party of 6 - 2 adults, 2 teenagers (15,13) a 3 year old and an infant (18 months walking)
We originally booked the Lavis bungalows but following reading some dreadful reviews we changed to Chrispy prior to departure. Unfortunately the flights could not be moved so we flew into Heraklion and had a 3 hour drive at 2 oclock in the morning. In fairness, it only took 90 minutes during the day but you cannot drive too fast on the Cretan roads in the dark.
On arrival at Chrispy at 6am we were pleasantly surprised, every thing was very new, clean and appealing. The duty staff were extremely couteous and transferred all the luggage to our room.
OK, here was the first problem. The room was on the third floor, was spotlessly clean and consisted of an upstairs gallery bedroom and a downstairs lounge with 3 single beds. To get upstairs you had an open staircase - none of this was really suitable when you have a toddler in the party. I would highly recommend these rooms for 2/3 people only.
A friendly word with the manager and safety netting was put around all of the railings and we were also offered a room on the ground floor.
There was a twin hob and large fridge in the room which were extremely useful over the two week period as we were able to make coffee, keep food/drinks cold and heat the milk for the small ones.
We booked all-inclusive and to be honest I heard many different nationalities moan about the quality of the food and drinks.
We had only been on one prior AI holiday which included all drink (branded/unbranded) and meals at any time of the day but was also twice as expensive.
Here you could have red/white wine free, local (somewhat watery beer free) on tap fizzy drinks (cola/lemonade/orangeaid/lemon-lime/soda water)
ice cream from 4pm
There were many people unhappy with the level of AI provided however, I felt it wasn't too bad and it probably depended on what you had paid for the hoiday. e paid around £550 per head (infant went free) including airfare
but there were guests who had paid more than twice that amount.
On the subject of food, breakfast was between 7 and 9.30 and after that there was coffee and rolls/salad/fuit/cake in the main bar.
The breakfast were of the extended continental style with hot sausages, scrambled egg, greek yoghurt, serials, cakes, fruit etc and in my opinion the best meal of the day.
Lunch and evening meals were a little hit and miss with the meats tending towards a grey colour and not much variety on a day by day basis although the selection was fairly good.
For the first week I thought the food was excellent but by the second we were eatling out more to get some variety.
The pools at the hotel were of a good sizes, with the main pool surrounded by umbrellas and sun beds - never enough of these and the Germans were a little keen to get them - but never underestimate British ingenuity...
The main complaint that I heard from guests and my own children was the complete lack of organised entertainment in the evenings. Apart from Thursday night for the Cretan evening (good on the second week but pathetic on the first week) You basically ate your evening meal and had nothing to do. Personally I am not a cabaret person but having something going on would have been good.
This also applied to the day time, given the presence of tennis+volley ball+ table tennis it wouldn;t have taken much to organise some good events for guests to particiapate in.
There was also a gym with quite good equipment and a pool table.
We hired a car for two weeks on arrival at the airport which was a good thing as taxis were not cheap - contrary to all prior advice!
Having a car meant that we could travel to find beaches..... as the local one which is two minutes from the hotel is totally pebbly and not much fun for children. Also this end of the island is relatively undeveloped so if you want to quickly find local tavernas for good quality Cretan food it's perfect. If you are looking for a lively thriving local town with nightlife it is definitely not.
Overall I've rated this as average which may be slightly unfair as cannot praise the manager highly enough as he really seemed to care and took an interest in all of the guests. The hotel was spotlessly clean, the food was fresh but boring on the meat side (my wife is a vegetarian so doesn;t care!!)
Would I go back - yes if it was just with my wife, but not with Children due to the lack of entertainment.
Hopefully you find this useful feel free to mail me with any questions
Regards
Steve
