Before choosing this hotel I read the reviews on trip advisor and didn't think the negatives people mentioned would bother us. Turns out, they did. The room was a bit small and in the back corner facing another building right across the way. We tried to book a sauna but were told they were not allowed to be used at the time because they didn't have a cleaner. When we went up to bed around midnight, the room was extremely hot so we opened the window. Unfortunately, it was very loud which made it difficult to sleep. Breakfast was fine with quite a bit of selection. The hotel interior lacked any charm which was disappointing, but there was a functioning lift (elevator) and parking available. Warning about the parking, because this hotel is in the heart of the entrance to old town, driving to the parking is slow and requires manuvering around hords of tourists and venders filling the streets. The location was wonderful but I would not stay there again.

Stayed four nights at the hotel in early April with a friend. We found the hotel to be centrally located to walk the city. The hotel is just minutes to the pubs, restaurants and shops. First-class accommodation (considering we were visiting a former Cold War outpost). The front desk staff were multilingual and helped us with a wide range of questions (how to get to Helsinki by ferry, what's the best Italian and Chinese restaurants, etc).
The breakfast buffet, which came with the price of the room, was substantial - from porridge to scrambled eggs, to bread/toast, yoghurt, dry cereal, fruit and sliced meats & cheeses. There was a nice bar and a sauna as well.
One slight drawback: You needed to ask each time you wanted to borrow their one laptop to use the internet - but it was free. Just felt odd asking each morning (can't do without checking my mail!) and there were others in a queue waiting for you to finish.
Rooms are a bit small but not complaining. I'm told there is outdoor dining/drinking available in their car park in warmer months.
You really can't go wrong with the Vana Wiru.

We stayed in the Vana Wiru for two nights. Great location near the Wiru gate. We booked a junior suite with sauna as this was the same price as a standard double when we booked. The room was on the fifth floor in the eaves of the roof. The low ceilings sounded like a charming feature initially but aren't so charming when you hit your head ( and I'm not tall!).
We were able to check in early. Breakfast was basic enough.Would recommend for the location more than the rooms or facilities.

I stayed here for 2 nights in June 2007 when the England football team were playing Estonia. I chose this hotel for it's location, it is in the Old Town an a pedestrian street. I had a single room and it was very small but spotlessly clean and quite modern. As soon as you step out of the hotel you are in the hustle of the centre, loads of bars and eating places just minutes away, a very popular Irish bar opposite the hotel, shops and take-aways just yards away(and a couple of stripclubs). Hotel staff always polite and helpful. The hotel has it's own pub on the ground floor but it was almost empty the two evenings I was there. I would like to go to tallinn again and if I do I will stay at this hotel, for the price I don't think you will get any better.
