This was, for £70 per night the worst hotel i have ever stayed in. The room was tiny (and i really mean tiny although i did see other people in our party with larger rooms), and the fixtures and fittings were pretty much all broken or partly hanging off the wall. This was the first hotel i've stayed in to not even supply tissues in the room. The tv was really small and there was no remote control. We also had a window onto the town square which gets very noisy with drunks from 11pm till 2am. The staff were also generally very unhelpful, and seemed to be quite happy doing as little as they could to help us. If i had been paying £35-£40 per night then i could stomach the aforementioned problems, but they are charging proper prices for very very poor accommodation. We only stayed as it was pre booked for us by the groom of the wedding we were going to. Otherwise i'd have been out of there sharpish... If you've got other options.... Take 'em!

Several of us were booked into this hotel for a wedding nearby, and from what the website says, it looks relatively nice, however looks can be deceiving. For £70 a night, although in the centre of town, its far too much for what this hotel offered, or rather didnt! There was no real vegetarian option for breakfast, staff didnt know how to smile, only one high chair was available despite it being a family hotel and when we stayed there were at least 3 babies were there, my nephew and friends baby included, staff were also rude in the restaurant and only acknowledged your arrival if you were a party of 2 sitting on a 3 person table, and they managed to run out of baked beans on Sunday morning (which they did not apologise for), and it doesnt seem that they have heard of a shop!
Rooms are also luck of the draw, you could end up with a tiny room with just a shower, a slightly larger one with a shower in bath,or a really nice room.
The bar however, i have no problems with, very friendly staff, especially the night porters and most of the service is done with a smile, apart from the owners, the woman didnt smile once, and i must say, i lost track of the amount of times it was referred to as fawlty towers, though if john cleese had been there, it would have been worth all the hassle!
In hind-sight, the place over the road looked much nicer, tho i am not intending on returning to Wantage anytime soon!
Best steer clear, it's not worth it!

The location of this hotel is ideal should you need to be in the centre of town, and the price (for the area) is competitive. However, the standards of maintenance leave a lot to be desired. Checking into a double room (no singles available) I found myself facing the local police station which made for a noisy night, but someone has to stay there I guess. Far more blameworthy was the failure of either bedside light to work (two blown bulbs - a whole one pounds worth?), the cold water tap to emit a lukewarm mixture regardless of time run, and a tea tray containing uht milk some months past it's use by date - another week and I could have had a yoghurt! Breakfast is good, but the bar-come-restaurant out front is best avoided - the food may be nice (?) but the atmosphere is more of a regulars bar for either watching football or listening to Iron Maiden (I am not adverse to either but I would imagine it is not the choice of a typical guest.) Awaiting the inevitable 'was everything to your satisfaction' when checking out I found it never came, by which time I was just too keen to leave to raise the issues. In short this hotel is functional yet hugely unloveable, and there seems to be little attempt to monitor levels of attention to detail.

My boyfriend and I stayed at The Bear during a romantic weekend away and we were really disappointed by the hotel.
The double room we were given was small and really dated. The bed was OK but creaky and the TV was so small you have to squint to see it! The decor was foul but to be fair, it was very clean. The worst thing about the room was the fact that the heating has to be switched off by the hotel, so even if you turn the dial down the heating stays on! In a tiny room on a warm spring evening this is not good - we were boiling. Opening the window was not an option as the annual village fair was positioned directly in front of the hotel, plus there was also a drunken singalong taking place in one of the function rooms below our window!
My advice would be to stay somewhere else - we paid £70 and you can probably get a nice B&B nearby for less than half that.
The only redeeming feature was the breakfast but by that point I just wanted to leave!

This hotel is in dire need of refurbishment. My room was dirty, dated, small, and dark. All fixtures and fittings in the room were either broken, or damaged, with the exception of the TV, which gave a meagre reception.
The real problem however is the beds. I had a single, and it was very small and very uncomfortable.
I can't think of redeeming features for this one - I recommend you travel a bit further afield and get yourself a good night's sleep!
