This was the perfect balance between a B&B and a hotel. The staff was extremely friendly. Food in Northern Europe generally sucks but I was really impressed with this place. The chef was really creative and the meals were full of fresh and organic ingredients. The hotel is located directly behind the Central Station in a "transitional" neighborhood. The internet was fast and had wireless thoughout the hotel including the outdoor lounge area. The rooms are on the small side but bed was extremely comfortable.

I was unfortunately so disappointed with my stay at Axel that I moved after just one night.
I have for a long time been a great fan of the Guldsmeden hotels in Copenhagen, and have always returned to them because of good service, standard and priceworth stays.
I was therefore pleased that Guldsmeden has opened one more hotel in Copenhagen and I booked a room at Axel for my weekend in the Danish capital. I thought that the price was pretty high (2000 DKK which is more than 250 ?), but I was convinced that Axel would deliver and that it would be worth it.
When you have a double room for more than 250 ?, you expect something above the ordinary. However, this was less than ordinary. The room was small and the bath room was not up to standards (the entire floor was drunk in water after a shower, as an example). The service upon arrival was not particularly pleasant either.
I was also chocked that the hotel charges extra for almost everything, with such a rate. I had to pay for Internet wireless connection, for breakfast (which has always been included at Guldsmeden hotels) and even for using credit card when paying!!! So 2000 Danish kroner is just a starting point - it all sums up to much more if you want to use the hotel!
I was so disappointed when I was looking at my room and knowing what I had to pay, so I decided to leave after one night. I called the reception to let them know. However, as I had booked my room on Internet (just booking, not paying), the receptionist could not make the changes. I therefore had to log on the net myself in order to modify my reservation. I had brought my own PC, but what about customers who want to modify their reservations without having a PC with them???
I quit after one night and found a very nice room at the SAS Radisson which is just around the corner. I will still recommend the two other Guldsmeden hotels (if they are still as they were 1-2 years ago), but not Axel. Sorry, Guldsmeden, you disappointed!

The Axel made our stay in Copenhagen very stress-free. I'd recommend it without hesitation.
We took our 15-month-old daughter, and there was a big, lightweight cot ready in the room. The room has windows that open, which is always nice, and good TV etc.
Even more impressive was that we emailed about arranging a babysitter a few days in advance. They got back to us very quickly, arranaged for a babysitter who was fantastic, and made us feel like it was no trouble at all. The staff were all very friendly and helpful.
The hotel itself has a nice courtyard to sit in, which is nothing amazing but nicely done. The lobby is stylish and relaxing, the room was very clean and quite spacious. The bathroom was small, but we didn't mind.
Breakfast was good, if a little crowded. There were high chairs available, which was good. We didn't have dinner at the hotel.
Location is good - the station area has its mixture of characters, but there are some decent places nearby to eat and get supplies, and there is a bike-hire shop 2 minutes walk away.
Overall, we were delighted. Going away with young kids can be tricky, and this hotel made it feel a lot easier.

I stayed at the Axel for one night in May on business. The hotel was really lovely, nice courtyard and a relaxed atmosphere. A nice change from the large chain hotels. Rooms were a little on the small side but comfortable. Breakfast was average, if you don't eat yoghurt there isn't much else. The welcome drink was a nice touch. My stay was good until I retired to my room about 1 am and tried to sleep. There was a thumping (base) noise coming up into my room which I couldn't drown out - even with my noise cancellation headphones. I assumed the music was coming from a club in the area but when I opened the windows all was quiet outside. After and hour of frustration and 2 calls to reception it was concluded that the music was coming from the hotel itself, finally it was turned off. There was a weak apology from a younger member of staff the next morning but it didn't seem all that sincere. The hotel is lovely but without a good nights sleep it doesn't mean much! I would still recommend a stay here but avoid room 112 if you want some sleep. Apparently I am the only guest to have complained about this. For the record I am not a light sleeper and I travel and stay in hotels at least 2 weeks out of every four for work.
