Footsteps from the beach

A very nice small hotel directly on Cannery Row. Hotel upgraded our room to a corner ocean view room due to the reserved room not being available for some reason. Employees were all very nice and I would definitely return, thank you! We parked at the lot ourselves instead of doing valet, it is about 2 blocks away from the hotel. The wood burning fireplace was a highlight of the room and we observed sea otters, seals and pelicans from the bedroom window. Although they provide binoculars I would recommend bringing your own if you have a nice pair.
Unacceptably Noisy - "Motel 6 at Spring Break"

Having stayed at the Spindrift Inn previously with very positive results, I opted to book a second visit.
This visit, the hotel is quite near if not at full occupancy, in July.
Starting at 7am the hotel is bustling with substantial noise - the elevator can be heard going up and down continuously from the $500/night room booked with an ocean view.
Doors slam regularly, seeming to be on a schedule.
Starting at 8am, housekeeping is busy - the sound resembles that of a power drill, a vacuum cleaner on wood floors running all around my room.
This continues until at least 10am.
Today incessant hammering is occurring from 9am on, 10:35 now and still going.
Imagine the area being busy with activity until 11pm, with the people hanging around on the beach until 1-2am? The noise level outside is quite loud - the walls and windows thing. Even with the windows latched (defeating the purpose of the $500/night wonderful ocean sound) it's still party time out there and you can hear it. Going to sleep at 2am and waking up at 7am to the sound of slamming doors and elevators is not my idea of a vacation getaway, let alone a romantic one.
The noise level in this hotel in the mornings matches that of a very busy, with college kids, budget hotel - like a Motel 6. The difference is the kids don't usually get started at 7am.
Ask for early checkout? The terms of the reservation say a $25 penalty is due for any cancellation without 72 hours notice. Ask the front desk about it - and it's not possible. We've already been billed for the full 4 day stay, and checkout on the third day before 10am is not possible even after citing all of the above.
Even after making the request to checkout early and pointing out the noise level - that is controllable by management - the hammering continues, the vacuuming immediately adjacent to this room continues. No effort to assist has been made whatsoever.
While the location is nice, the sound of the ocean wonderful, and the old hotel rooms actually to my liking (wood floors and a fire place are nice) - the noise level and unwillingness to help other than apologize (not helping at all) make this hotel a big thumbs down for me - especially during any peak travel periods. There are plenty of other options outside of the Inns of Monterey ownership - and that's where my $2,000+ will be going next time.
Heck I could save myself $1800 and stay in a Motel 6 and have a better experience than I'm having right now.

Excellent hotel, but here's the deal: thanks to the reviews on Trip Advisor, we made sure we booked a corner King room. AWESOME!!! We didn't want to leave. Comfy bed, fireplace, hardwood floors, but best of all, bay window sitting areas with full view of the bay! I don't recall our exact room number, but when you book, make sure it's on the corner so you get panoramic views. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!

I booked this hotel through Priceline's bidding feature. I was trying to find a nice room for a family of four. I called the hotel a few weeks before our stay (as I usually do) to request a room with two double or queen-size beds. The hotel said I would have to upgrade my room in order to get two beds in my room -- but they would not 'honor' the room I had already booked as part of the upgrade because it was booked through Priceline -- meaning I would have to pay full price for a room with two beds. So I decided to book a separate room using the AAA discount. After reading reviews on this site, I figured it would probably be worth it.
The hotel was stingy. They were not sold out the night of our stay, so -- as I am accustomed to at larger places -- I (politely!) asked if we might be able to get an ocean-view room for at least my parents' reservations (since it was their 35th anniversary). The staff acted as if they did not understand what I was asking and said that it would cost me $399 for that upgrade. No way.
At night, I realized I had forgotten my toothbrush and toothpaste -- so I went downstairs to ask them for one (as one would usually do at a larger hotel). The guy looked at me skeptically and then pretended to rummage through various cabinets and boxes before "finding" a toothbrush and toothpaste. When I asked for one of those disposable plastic combs (that most hotels have), he said to me, "There's a drugstore down the street."
It's unfortunate that their customer service and 'generosity' do not complement the location and charm of the physical building.
