First the good -- the hotel is right at a Metro station and there is a huge modern supermarket below.
The bad -- I had a 10 minute walk from the elevator to my room -- don't leave anything behind that you might want. The buffet breakfast is not very good. THe hot water was not working the first day (to be fair it was a citywide electrical problem) but the next day rhe water ran brown for a while. Definitely don't drink it!! I paid to use the computer, but it never worked properly, and no one spoke English well enough to explain or get a refund.
The mediocre -- the Georgian restaurant on the second floor -- the food was okay, the service terrible and while trying to be upscale, didn't quite have it down. Nice entertainment though.

Big hotel without any special characture, but nothing to complain at all.

I went to St Petersburg on a bus tour and stayed at Hotel Moskva. I have to say, the hotel was so bad it was surreal.. The hotel is from the Soviet era, which means that everything is huge. There are looooong corridors which lead to the rooms, there are vast open spaces all over with a few akward pieces of furniture, the lobby appears to be grand and shiny.
The rooms are okay but quite drab. On the first evening we could only get piping hot water from the shower!! And to make things worse the room was always like a sauna, and I really mean very very hot. So it was obviously very uncomfortable to sleep and trying to tune the temparature to a cooler one did not work.
The breakfast was mostly pastries, it was hard to find any fruit or vegetables - a few sticks of cucumber and orange slices were what I had to be content with. The main breakfast room (or rather hall) is not very welcoming, it is large and not much thought has been put into decor.
The rooftop bar with "views" was really puney, I would not waste time having a beer there. The lobby bar is also very boring - your best bet is to go to the city center to look for lively bars and fun.
What I did like about this hotel is the location. Even though it is not right in the city center, it's at the end of Nevski Prospekt, so if you're in good shape you can walk. If not, the metro is right next door! And I do recommend taking the metro because it's cheap and the different stations are really worth seeing because each station is like a piece of art.
We only slept (although not very well) at the hotel, so the poor quality did not matter so much. So it's okay for active tourists but if you're looking to have a romantic getaway in beautiful St Petersburg, this is not the place to stay.

I am an American living and working in Russia, but do not speak the language so my assistant was assisting me with hotel arrangements for a personal trip I was planning over Russia's Independence Holiday. I completely forgot it was White Nights so my first several choices were already booked, but she found Hotel Moscow and booked it.
After reading some of the reviews, I was not too excited about her choice, but knew it would be difficult to find something else especially this late so stayed with the Hotel Moscow. I am glad I did, yes, it was overpiced, but that is no different than any hotel in Russia but I found the hotel very acceptable. I was lucky and had a room near the elevator and as I looked down the long hall, I can see why some complained, but the room had all the basics and I loved it was right next to the metro stop as well as looked out to the River so we could watch the draw bridge right from our room.
The service was fine; they did not go out of their way, but again, that is normal for most Russian hotels, but there was always someone who could speak English and they did answer all of my questions and even let us check in early (~9 AM). I hated the fact they charged me 120 rubles to regrister me when I am already regristered in my home city, but that is more of a rule/law and not the hotel's fault. I ran into the same problem in Sochi but when I go back, I would definitely stay there again.

this is by far one of the worst hotels i have ever stayed at. firstly it is impossbile to get ANYHTHING done here, like eat, order room service, communicate with the staff..even paying for the room was an adventure (i had to go to a hotel room on the 7th floor and pay) and i nearly left without paying.
the room was too hot one day and too cold the next, there was no hair-dryer, no minibar, the tv is dreadful, i could hear everything from the rooms next door til 3am, the bed was too small, the linen too little, the staff UNBELIEVABLY rude , the actual hotel building is one of those soviet dinosaurs which was actually quite interesting but the corridors are a mile long each way and one night there was drunk homeless guy passed out near my room.
To me it seems this hotel is basically run by the city's mafia. if you're lookng for an adventure and reminiscent of old soviet times you can stay here and pretend its 1983, but i was working and wanted something comfortable and relaxing, i ended up relaxing more during my meetings.
the city however is one of the most beautiful i've ever seen :)
