I needed a hotel for a one night stay in a hotel that was within walking distance of HP Pavilion, as we were in San Jose to see a concert.
We were in a king room. Being an older hotel, the room wasn't large and the bathroom was small, but it wasn't a problem as we had left our kids back home and it was just the two of us. The bathroom was well stocked, even had cotton balls and q-tips (don't think I've ever seen that in a hotel room). I loved the mural atop the bathroom ceiling. If you turned the lighting on a specific way, it actually looked like a window was open the way the light was illuminated from the ceiling (the look of natural light). The bed was extremely comfortable with plenty of pillows, although the pillows were small squares not full sized (it didn't bother us one bit). One thing about the room and I did see this mentioned in another post...we had a room facing the street (almost above the hotels front doors). We did hear the trains go by at night and morning. Somehow it really didn't bother me. It did disturb my wife in the morning.
Everyone at the hotel was extremely friendly. We decided to have dinner before the concert, one of the staff pointed out several locations within walking distance. A simple walk (less than a half mile) we found several options to choose from.
Breakfast at the hotels restaurant was very good and not too expensive.
If you need a room for the night near the arena that's within walking distance, this might be the place for you. Neighborhood seemed safe was well. The Sainte Claire was a very nice older hotel. I'd stay here again in a heartbeat.

I stayed for a week at the Sainte Claire for a convention, and I was very impressed with the quality of this hotel and its staff. I love old structures that are refurbished and embrace the antique with the amenities of the modern. My room was a king. The bed was amazing: the mattress and the sheets/covers were all high quality. The TV was a large flatscreen. I liked the layout of the bathroom. The room was not terribly large, but for one or two people it is adequate and the decor is very nice. One small drawback is the lack of a microwave in the room or in any kind of communal kitchenette (there isn't one of the those) but if your meals are taken care of elsewhere, that should be no issue. I highly recommend this hotel for anyone looking for a nice, classy hotel experience.

Just back from a night at the Sainte Claire, which was where a lawyers' group met the last two days. It was just about perfect. The room, though not super-large, was more than adequate. The beds have a choice of pillows of all types, hard and soft, including down. The bathrooms are original (and therefore not large) but they are well-equipped. The beds were just about perfect. The restaurant was not too expensive, the bar was well stocked, the front desk was fast and efficient, and the meeting rooms were very good and well provided with food and beverages.
The location is as central as it gets, with the great walking place, Paseo San Antonio only two blocks away, the convention center across the street, along with theaters, etc. You may hear the streetcar, but for me that's a plus. And it means that the hotel is a short streetcar ride away from the downtown train station called Diridon.
If you need to be in San Jose, or are booking a small (100-150 group to meet there, I highly recommend it. And there is a real advantage to being in a smaller hotel -- the other hotels were just crazy this weekend, what with a gymnastics tournament, the state Democratic Party convention, etc. I, too, noticed the oath each guest must take not to have a party, but after all, there was no party, and even the Australian gymnastic team that stayed there was very quiet.
