I have stayed at The Grey Fox twice, once in February 2005 on a winter sports holiday as a teacher accompanying a group of English teenagers : most recently last week (June 08) on the way to my wedding in Vermont and tomorrow (still June 08) I shall return with my now husband, for a two day "recovery "before flying home from Boston.
The service from the staff is good, from behind the desk to the housekeeping. Nothing is too much trouble and they are keen to ensure that your stay is as you would wish.
We loved our room and booked on our departure to make sure we could have the same room on our return. Two comfy Queen size beds (although we only used the one)! Good size bathroom and a private balcony with a view of the mountains and the odd badger making its way into the nearby woodland in the early morning!
We enjoy ed the indoor swimming pool with its hot tub and sauna...as it was hot, we also made good use of the outdoor pool too.
There is a washing machine and separate tumble drier plus a small games room with table football and table hockey which kept my students well amused at the time.
The main hotel's door is locked at 9pm but your room key will open it so,allowing you, as a guest, access. In the light of recent events where a child was taken from their accomodation , as a parent and an ex teacher, I would welcome any sensible security steps such as this.
The location is good for Stow village as well as the slopes of Mt Mansfield.
The hotel offers good accomodation at a fair price .
The Dutch Pancake House, on the same site but run separately, serves enormous helpings of calorie laden pancakes etc

Is Stalag Stowe sure this is where he stayed? Our experience was great. VERY helpful staff at check in and check out. She explained quite clearly the hours you needed to use your key to access the inn. The pool(s) are great. Our room had 1 king bed and one double in two rooms (they are open to each other.) If you're there with a family, the bathroom is a bit small. Excellent location not far from the village. The Dutch Pancake Cafe at the inn was wonderful and the desk clerk offered the pancake recipe when we checked out.

I had read previouis reviews on this resort and it was with great trepidation that I booked my auto club into this Inn. Although not the Ritz, the rooms were clean, the beds comfortable and the staff friendly and helpfull. The double Televisions in both the sitting area and the bedroom were a plus because night owls can view the TV without distubing the occupant in the bedroom. They accomodated the group nicely, even giving us a group discount. The 25% discount at the attached Dutch Pancake House was also a plus. For people who like to stay put at night it even has it's own pub.
A good place for the money.

This has got to be one of the rudest motels (not worthy of being called an Inn) that I have ever stayed at. No let me change that, prison, not even motel.
When we checked in, the Manager told us that after hours, the doors would be locks. While I would never consider Stowe Vt. a dangerous place to visit, I understand exterior locks on a facility. When I questioned the Manger the locks, him simply stated security, and upon probing about safety, he stated that they didn’t have any problems. Never did I dream that the lockdown would be so complete. My wife at 10 pm went to the Lobby to have a little private time and a glass of wine. She unlocked the room and went to the Lobby, after about an hour or so, she went to return to the room and was locked out. She repeatedly tried to contact the Night Manager via phone only to get a voice mail box (she remembered where our room was, but not the number). Trust me, her words were choice. She even went outside to try to toss a rock at the window but was hampered by 5 ft snow drifts. There is an after hours phone in the vestibule for emergency’s only but a) we were never told about it and b) the writing is small and she was without her glasses so couldn’t read anything. Around 4 plus hours of being locked out, she finally jumped over the front desk and found room keys in a drawer (talk about great security, NOT) and let herself in. Why the front desk and every phone in this place doesn’t ring to the after-hours emergency number is beyond me and down right criminal.
While all of this is inconceivable in your cheapest of motels, when I approached the Morning Front desk clerk and told her what happened, never once did she raise any care or concern or the simplest of apologies for my wife’s ordeal. When I asked about a Night Manager, she stated they “didn’t feel one was warranted” therefore an “unmentioned” security phone was enough. When I challenged about the lobby being locked from the rooms, again the mantra was “security”.
A short while later, at the attached restaurant. The staff stated that the Inn and Restaurant were separate owners. Night and Day difference in attitude. She went on to state that people were being robbed blind at this place and the solution was to put locks on every possible door. I would think that employing a 24 x 7 Manager would be more pro anti-theft then just locks. Especially, after my wife had easy access to any room key.
Stowe as a vacation spot was wonderful. The Grey Fox Inn was horrific. Upon checkout, the clerk asked, “other than your wife’s mishap, how was your stay”. Again, no apology. And, upon review of the bill, they put an 8.5% hospitality tax on the bill. This was never mentioned upon booking. When asked, it was stated the owner added that to cover extra costs without raising rates. Stay away!!!!! Never every again.

After having been at the Grey Fox Inn several times before we stayed here again for 2 nights in September. Upon arrival we were refused the rate, which was offered to us by email and we had big discussions to get it. After entering our room in the Carriage House, we noticed a strange odour which could not be clearly identified. We were disappointed for the second time since we arrived. Furnishing and beddings, as well as the bathroom would need a total refreshing. The second night we had an experience, we would never like to have again: We met several pests on the floor, which obviously came out of the corner of the wall. Horrible!!!!!
Upon checking out, there was the same discussion about the rate as on checking in. Finally we got it, but only after talking to the manager.
The only positive which can be reported was breakfast at the Dutch Pancake House, were food and staff met our expectation.
For taking rates like they do, you would expect a little bit more:
More comfort, more politeness, more tidiness, no discussions about obvious facts and NO pests. We will never return to this place.
