Good location for seeing the principal sights of Riga. Having stayed four nights, I guess I saw five different staff on Reception - all welcoming. Room size not great but then the hotel has been shoe-horned into a narrow town-house.
Breakfast is taken in the basement of the hotel but do not be put off by that. My room faced the front and it was not possible to keep the window open at night because of the noise - there was not much but it simply 'carries' and prevents sleep. All in all, would recommend. Colleagues stayed elsewhere, principally at the Valdemars which looked to be recently renovated although some complained about room size there!

We stayed in the hotel for 2 nights in early July 07. The location of the hotel is perfect, right in the central area of the old town. Most of the tourist spots are within walking distance.
Breakfasts and rooms were basic. We took a family room as suggested by the hotel, but it was actually too small for 3 adults. Our room was noisy too as its facing Tirgonu Street. There is a pub right opposite to the hotel, and some restaurants along the same street. So it would be very noisy even after midnight. There's no air-conditioning our room so we could not close the windows during our stay. If you are light sleepers, you would have a hard time in the evening. We wanted to change to other rooms but the hotel was fully booked. If you have to stay in this hotel, ask for those rooms not facing Tirgonu Street when making reservation.

We asked for a double but got a room with two single beds at opposite ends of the room. It was clean but devoid of character, which i expected form a hotel in the center of such an historic city. The staff speak good English but are rather unapproachable. We asked for a taxi to be booked in advance for our return to the airport but we had to wait half an hour, when asked if they could check the booking we were told 'it will come'! It did eventually require a further phone call.
Breakfast was adequate, bread, cereal, ham and cheese all available. The cellar area a bit cramped when every guest trying to fill plates or make toast on the two toasters at the same time.
The hotel is very central to visit all the Old Town sites, everywhere within walking distance.
Plenty of restaurants and cafes, with a choice of local specialities on offer, service can be slow but the food is worth the wait.
The city itself is beautiful and clean, with freshly painted buildings and lovely archetecture. No litter, owing the the many bins, which makes walking through the streets a pleasure.
I would certainly recommend Riga for a city break and the Kolonna Hotel as a clean, central hotel.

A group of us travelled to Latvia for a wedding and made a week out of it by spending 4 nights in Riga. We did not know much about Riga and some of the hotel websites were quite confusing as some were saying that they were in the heart of Riga but that was "new" Riga rather than the old town. In finding the Kolonna we found a gem.
As there was a group of us it suited every budget and was right in the heart of old town. You are minutes away from all of the main attractions such as the Freedom Monument, The House of Blackheads and the Museum of Occupation.
The rooms were exceptionally clean, as was the whole hotel. We didn't have the breakfast there as too much socialising the night befor meant that we were never up on time!! But the Lido restaurant across the street was very good.
Overall, a very clean and centrally located hotel that is a great price.
