The first night I was ready to move to another hotel. We had a tiny room in the back of the hotel. The furniture is shabby looking and there is not comfortable seating, so you end up sitting on the bed. There was a parade that was unbelievably loud. The window looks right into someone's apartment, so we kept the curtain closed, which meant losing a good portion of the usable space in the room because of the location of the curtains. However, the hotels central location was a big plus. And the staff was absolutely wonderful so that in time we resigned ourselves to the noise and lack of space and came to enjoy the hotel more. Saturdays can be extremely noisy if there are special events in the plaza. If I were to do it over again I would stay in Belem, where so many of the museums are.

We arrived at the Metropole exhausted and looking bedraggled. Unfortunately, we were 5 hours early for check-in. They were kind enough to offer us a room immediately (unfortunately, the bed was too small). Within 1 1/2 hours they gave us a choice of two rooms, one overlooking the Rossio and another facing the rear of the hotel. The one with the excellent view (Rossio, Castle, etc) proved to be quiet, quite large enough and very comfortable. The staff was very supportive with travel and dinner advice and very welcoming. This was a perfect place to stay-- 6 blocks from the river, two blocks to the train station to Sintra, two blocks to the Figureou station and the tram to Belem, three blocks to the lift to the Barrio Alto and dinner. We just could not have done any better or have been any more pleased!

This is a very lovely hotel with an excellent central location. Staying here, you are within a few minutes of walking distance to most neighborhoods of interest to tourists or public transportation (tram, bus, metro). The rooms are clean, the bathrooms quite large for a european hotel. My room, facing the back street, had a small balcony with french doors to let in the breeze and enjoy the sideways view onto the Convento do Carmo or the main square. The reception staff was very friendly and helpful. There is also a very nice seating area on the 2nd floor (1st floor in europe) with french doors and couches and chairs, overlooking the main square - a very nice place to read a book in the afternoon or take in the hotel's breakfast.
