We didn't get the room we had booked and the front desk staff was very unhelpful. In the end they downgraded us to a poor standard room instead of the deluxe room we had booked, with the promise that they would sort out the rate difference, and let us know.
We never heard back from the staff, and were left to sort things out ourselves with hotels.com. In the end we got a $20 coupon from hotels.com for the trouble. In all my years of travel experience I have never encountered such poor hotel management. I urge you to reconsider you choice of this - on the paper good looking - hotel.

The Highlander was a good, inexpensive option for anyone flying out of Manchester. It's 2 minutes (or less) from the rental car return, the rooms are large and relatively new, and the staff is friendly. It's a basic hotel, but serves its purpose extremely well.

Disappointing

I'd hoped to wind down my vacation with a little opulance before my flight home. Wrong! My room was in a building 150 yards behind the registration desk. They said I could wait for the shuttle to take me there. I hauled my 2 bags over by myself. Then I found that I was booked for an upstairs room, with no elevator. There was no staff in the building. My room key let me in the front door, and I was on my own. I had two suitcases to take upstairs. (I'm 58 years old, female.) If I were in the same building as the registration desk, I would have requested a different room. But I wasn't going to schlep my bags back there.
My room was spare. It was generally disappointing.

I just spent two nights here, one at either end of a trip to San Francisco, and generally stay here whenever I fly out of Manchester. I have had a good experience every time I have stayed here.
The pluses: Free shuttle to airport that runs 24 hours and is very efficient -- you are literally five minutes or less from the terminal. Discounted parking for guests, with a premium space (they even clean off your car for you in winter if it snows). Nice facilities and grounds -- they have made the most of their on-airport location (although the pool is pretty basic), including a two-sided fireplace in the lobby and books-to-borrow located on armoires in the lobby and on the guest floors. Decent if not imaginative food - great salads and appetizers, and a small but decent selection of wines by the glass. (Haven't eaten breakfast here though.) Efficient check-in and check-out. I have never had my sleep disturbed by airplanes. Rooms are nice and spacious but definitely not fancy, and I haven't personally experienced any cleanliness problems. Consistently lower priced than the new Holiday Inn down the street, where I have also stayed.
The minuses: The overall ambiance is serviceable but not fancy and no personality (like a chain hotel), although they try to make it homey with country-time furniture in the lobby and prints on the walls. Poor/spotty service in the dining room, which doesn't have much ambiance (ask for a table overlooking the lawn). Small bar -- an afterthought really - with really lackadaisical-bordering-on-rude service. Front-desk service is also uneven -- the younger people (of course) being abrupt, but there is one older gentleman who is wonderful. Shuttle drivers are all personable, helpful and prompt.
I have met the owner, Mr. Peter Morgan, and he really does care about providing a quality experience, but he is dependent on the local labor pool. (I can say this because I am from New Hampshire.)
For a business hotel, it's a good value I feel.

We stayed here after our wedding and I would not recommend this property to anyone unless you are looking to be treated rudely and sleep in an uncomfortable bed. The dinner was wonderful but once we moved away from the dining area the Highlander was horrible.
The staff in the bar area were rude, they actually told us to leave at 10:20 while we still had wedding guests in the bar (in fact, the woman working the bar shut off the tv in the middle of an inning while the Red Sox were in the World Series). We weren't told the bar was closing ahead of time, the bartender just decided she was done for the night and told us to get out - she also told us if we wanted to continue speaking with our guests we were allowed to take them to our room.
After our guests were kicked out of the hotel we went to our room. The room itself was fairly spacious and looked ok on first inspection. However, after being in the room for a few hours we began
to realize that it was not....The shower head was hanging off the wall, and there was mold and dirt in the bathroom. To top it all off the bed in the room was the worst bed I have ever slept in, it's pretty sad when you sit down in a coach airline seat and feel much more comfortable than you had felt all night long. The bed honestly felt like you were sleeping on a concrete slab covered with a cheap sheet. When I finally decided it was useless to try and sleep (around
3am) my body actually hurt from lying on this mattress.
The next morning the continental breakfast was not open until 7am (the door was locked so there was no chance of even grabbing something from what they had set up from the night before) so we weren't able to take advantage of that when we left at 6:45. The staff didn't care and told me that we would have to wait until 7 in order to get a cup of coffee.
I definitely got the feeling that this hotel does not care about their guests. They know they have the location and know that if you want to stay close to the airport you will have to stay in their miserable rooms no matter how they treat you. My suggestion would be to spend the extra $20 or so and take a cab to a hotel where they at least pretend to care about your comfort.
