I have stayed at the Rutland Square Hotel in Nottingham many times over the past decade - when travelling on my own on business and when sightseeing with friends and family. My most recent stay was last Sunday night (18th May) when I paid ?40 for my single room with full English Breakfast. The hotel itself is located in the centre of the city next to Nottingham Castle and not far from the shopping centre and railway station - as well as my favourite pub, the "Trip to Jerusalem". When I arrived I was checked in by a friendly and helpful receptionist. My room was small but clean and warm, with facilities for making coffee/tea and a powerful hairdryier. The bed was spacious and comfortable. My only quibble would be the bath which was small - although I'm of average height I couldn't stretch out in it - and the lid and seat of the toilet wouldn't stay up because they were jammed against the bath. I slept well and enjoyed an excellent breakfast - not the very best I've had in a hotel but not bad, with lots of choice and served by friendly and attentive staff. Only on one occasion has breakfast been sub-standard - poor service by inexperienced staff - but in general my experiences have been satisfactory. I would happily suggest this hotel to friends and family staying in Nottingham and I'd certainly go back there again myself.

The Rutland is not the cleanest hotel in the world. On arrival we were given a tiny room on the 3rd floor which had definitely seen better times. It just did'nt have the right smell, while the carpet was dirty, and wall paper soiled and torn in places. After having dinner at a nearby restaurant, we returned to the hotel, to find that the bed's mattress should have been thrown out years ago. The springs seem to have gone and it was sagging all over the place. It was a horrible night's sleep, and in the morning noticed how the room was in fact dirtier than we thought, because there seemed to be evidence on the woodwork of a previous mite infestation. At this point, I asked to see the housekeeper, who seemed to laugh off my complaint. However, the receptionist agreed to give us another room, but to which we were made to haul our luggage. This room was much larger and cleaner, though still not spotless. We chose the Rutland after looking for the best deal available on the internet, but we will not be returning in a hurry, as there are much cleaner hotels in Nottingham to stay at, even if slightly more expensive or further away from the city centre.

Very disappointing generally. Room was tiny and very shabby. The sink was cracked and it was really old. Even worse was that there a continuous draft as the frame of the window was not sealed properly so I had to draw the curtains to keep out the draft. The hotel is in real need of restoration. Having said that though the staff were really friendly and helpful. I won't consider this hotel again on my next visit to Nottingham. Also is located int he city centre so good spot.

I have read several reviews for this hotel and there have been a lot of negative ones.
However, they need to be put into some sort of perspective. I have stayed here twice. On both occasions it was in a single room as I was enjoying a night out in Nottingham.
I paid ?40 for the single room which included breakfast. Although the room was small and I didn't make breakfast as a result of the night before it was excellent value.
The hotel is well within staggering distance of Nottingham's nightlife and a stone's throw from the Castle, tales of Robin Hood and the Old Trip to Jerusalum pub.
The room was clean and the staff friendly.
