During a hot streak in Yerevan, Armenia in July 2006, I decided to abandon my friend's city apartment with no AC and head to one of Armenia's most interesting hotels. The Tufenkian Avan Villa Hotel is located in the Nork Marash district of the city. It takes about 12 minutes by taxi to get there from Republic Square. It's definitely somewhat isolated up in the hills, but, well worth it since your view of Yerevan is right in front of you from your room. In short, he rooms are very tastefully decorated with Tufenkian carpet themes of "Old Armenia". The beds are extremely comfortable with Crown Jewel Sealy Mattresses. The sheets are at least 300 threat count. The breakfasts are made to order. And, it's a very quiet comfortable environment. In the summer, it is somewhat cool up in the hills. But, the great thing is that they have central air in each room. There are only 13 rooms, which makes it like a boutique property. The service can be uninspired sometimes, and there is no outdoor grounds other than the back patio. Otherwise, this is a very affordable ($100 night) alternative to the expensive and over-rated Marriot/Golden Tulip/Hotel Ani experience. If you want city action right out of your doorstep, this isn't for you. If you don't mind a quick cab ride into town, you can't beat the Tufenkian Avan Villa.
