Friendly staff, retro accommodation

Never before has such a combination of colour, texture and patterns been thrown together in one room! Animal, floral and retro prints fuse to assault the senses! Our room was like a museum of fabric which kept us giggling throughout our stay. The accommodation was clean and the bathroom modern. The beds were a little narrow and creaky but on the whole fine.
The staff were friendly and approachable and spoke English. Good value for money, good location. Breakfast was ok. Worth having as there are few cafes in the town.

We stayed at the Lotos on two occasions when we were in Astrakhan'. Once for two nights in February 2004 and the other for three nights in April 2004. It was very adequate. The rooms were small and clean. The food was good. There was also a casino to keep us entertained. It also has great views of the Volga River. If we ever got to Astrakhan' again, we would stay at the Lotos.

Stayed at the Lotus in March of 2003. Cold (but warmer than Moscow), Volga was partially frozen. Hotel is right on the Volga. Casino attached, leather-jacketed heavies hanging around, but no problem. Did receive phone call asking if we "wanted sex?"; probably the advertised massage service drumming up business. Had to move rooms mid-stay due to painting, staff overly concerned about us moving coathangers between floors. Complimentary breakfast very basic. Rooms nothing to get excited about. About $70/night if I recall. Not as maze-like as the Hotel Astrakhan.

Lotos onthe River

I stayed here in 1999. This is a typical large Russian hotel from the communist era. Rooms are small and dingy. It is centally located and is on the river. Staff was not very helpful.
