The hotel staff at the front desk, cleaning and repair service were very friendly and polite. I have no doubt that the mangement company or owners of the hotel establish what they can and cannot do. Our check in was a breeze and they let us in at 12:00 PM. But one we got past the pleasantries, it was clear the hotel's only asset beyond their employees was its location in the old city.
The hotel has no updates other than paint. We stayed in room 259. The A/C froze over and soaked the carpet by the bathroom the first afternoon. Their solution was to dry it out with towels. The room already had smelled of mildew, but the hotel was sold out, so moving to another room was not an option. There are no updates a few plugs for your computer or any other electronics.
The coffee in the lobby was horrible! In addition, they charge you $7 per day for parking, just to scrape more money from you. For a bit more you can go to the Hilton, a 4 Star hotel or for half the price, you can get the same quality room at the Scottish Inn just 2 blocks north of this hotel.
I would not recommend this hotel until they clean up their act and do some modernization.

The Good: Location was wonderful; the hotel was on our trolly stop, near St. George St., and across the street from the bay. The staff were polite and helpful and dining was within walking distance. The pool looked nice, (we didn't use it).
The Bad: The hotel is not updated in the least and is more like an old motel in style. The bathroom was out moded. No electronic key, so if you split up one group will be keyless. Parking was tight.
The Ugly: The carpet was so filthy that it turned our white socks black after walking from the bed to the bathroom, (thank goodness we don't walk in hotelrooms in our bare feet). The shower curtain wasn't clean and the grout in the bathroom should have been light grey and not dark icky grey. Also the seam between the bathtub surround and the tub was black.
We would stay again because of the location, but next time I'm bringing some bleach cleaner and darker socks. There is a little dinner next door that seemed to be popular so on our last day we ate there, but it took 50 min. to get our food from the time we ordered, so be sure you have the time if you go there, and I recommend one of those tour train/trolly things to avoid walking/driving all over creation and parking issues. Also ask for a discount if you will be staying multiple days, we did and got one!

This motel is surely Motel Hell! I can't beleive that they haven't been shut down by the health department. This was a very dirty hotel. The bathrooms were awful. The rooms smelled of oldness. No one cleaned the rooms, or changed the linen. It was for sure a 1 star hotel. The rates were crazy. it was a $29.99 a night motel, but we paid $200 a night. I would never go back. The place needs to be sut down and condemned.

We loved the Montery Inn. It is an old school hotel with an "antique smell" that goes away after a short time in the room and you don't notice it again. It is in a great location with beautiful views. The staff were all VERY nice and helpful. The rooms were clean and the beds comfy. I recommend it and will be going back.

I was hesitant to book at this hotel because of the negative reviews. I was pleasantly surprised by my stay.
I choose this hotel because of the location. It is ON the bay. Almost all rooms have a bay view. I stayed in 249 and was directly across from the water. It is a completely walkable location. The trolley stop is in front of the hotel. Once you park your car (only 7$ instead of 18$ next door at the Hilton) there is no need to drive anywhere. (the trolley even has a 'run' to the beach).
The Inn is NOT a resort. There is not mch to do at the Monterey other than sleep, swim or soak up the sun on the 2nd floor deck. However, I stayed here to see the nation's oldrest, city not the inside of a hotel.
The room is adequate. The furnishings are a bit dated and the bathroom is tiny, but for the money (weekend or not) you can't beat the location. It was clean, has a refrigerator in the room at no extra charge and the staff was VERY friendly. They even let us keep the car parked all day on the day we checked out for no additional cost.
I was concerned about noise as well since there were children staying near the room and some younger people down the hall. With the window closed, I heard nothing all night. Just make sure your room is NOT on the end next to Hypolita street since the cafe nexr door does have live music at night. Also, if you are a light sleeper ask for a second floor room since the rooms on the back do get some street noise.
I recommend this hotel, but only to travelers who are down to earth people who travel to experience life, rather than those who look to be trated like royalty and can't fathom the of staying in a room with an out of style bed spread.
