We have just come back from a weekend stay at the George and were both very impressed despite staying in room number 7 which is very compact (small). Service all over the Hotel was first class as was the standard of cleanliness. The hotel is decorated beautifully with a keen eye to detail. It is located in a great part of the town although there is no parking. We travelled by motorbike and the staff were very accommodating in letting us use the side of the hotel to leave the bike. The only small negative is the outside space, we felt they could have done a bit more to 'pretty it up', but there were plenty of tables available. We will certainly stay at this hotel again but chose a larger room.

Return visit to this hotel.
Rooms of very high standard; plenty of space & very good fittings. Makes a nice change ! Staff professional & generally helpful.
We thought that the restaurant was not quite as good as last year, but it was still pretty good.

My husband and I are regular visitors to The George. Since the refurb it has become our favourite UK retreat - we love exploring the area and find the hotel fabulously informal, while being extremely well-run. The place has been miraculously transformed by the Clarkes - the rooms are gorgeous with luxurious touches, the bar and restaurant equally so. The food is fantastic and we are always assured of a warm welcome. Other people clearly share our view - booking ahead is advised!

We booked a double delux room for Saturday evening cost of ?225 on arriving at the hotel we was given room 21 this was through the rear of the hotel which could have been given a cleanup not very impressed at this stage. The room had a courtyard with patio furniture could of been lovely but looked a bit scruffy. The bedroom was good but the bathroom had black mould in tile grout and toilet flush was tempremental.
We had dinner booked for 9.30 we joined the bar for drinks about 8.15 where we sat and had a couple of drinks, we had to ask for drinks at the bar at no point was we asked if we were dining and given menus we had to approach the bar man to say we had booked a table in the restuarant which he checked and could find no booking, they sorted this out and we was given a table.
The food itself was mediocre but then we had been pre warned that the food was not great by someone who had previously eaten there before, but we thought we would give it a chance.
In the morning we woke and went to have a shower but no hot water, we reported this but they did not seem bothered.
On the whole not a great experience will not be staying at the George again too many young people with no evident mangement in control. Hotel seems to have no mother or father!
The reviews we have read about the George when it first opened
in national press were great, I suggest they go back now.

Delightful
I recently stayed at the George, and thought it was almost perfect!
The rooms are trendy without being over the top; the furnishings were excellent, bathroom products so good that some unfortunately did fall into my suitcase!!
I do appreciate these are things you might expect, but it was the little thoughtful things that caught my eye, post cards in the room, that were actually nice ones you would want to send!!, a cute box of tea and coffee goodies, lavender scented pillows etc everything in the room was carefully thought out and of excellent quality, the bathroom was equally good with great shower and quality furnishings.
The bar area is again excellent in d?cor as is the restaurant, the only slight failing would be the vegetarian selection at dinner and breakfast, {however if you are vegetarian, don’t be put off as the owners did mention this was something they were looking in to so I expect it may change for the better soon}.
I could go on and on about the furniture and paintings and attention to detail, but I wont bore readers of this review any longer, I would close by saying, it was a delightful stay and I would definitely stay again.
