hotel ideally situated - lovely views over the harbour. Staff very friendly, especially the staff at the poolside bar, and at breakfast.
food was pretty good - usual greek style breakfast selection. It was great watching the fishermen land their catches over breakfast.., .
Some really nice tavernas in the town., especially the dionysus, (cracking atmosphere and entertainment) ,The museum restuarant is nice and the dutch bars were good as well. The islanders are just as friendly as they are on the other greek
islands.
go on the blue train to the asklepieon, (closed on monday), it is absolutely stunning.
Good location

Astron Hotel is in a great location, right on the harbour front with lovely views to the front of the hotel. We weren't disturbed by any noise from bars or anything. Upon arrival I was surprised at how lovely the hotel was inside, very clean, fresh look in reception area, unfortunatley this did not carry on up to the rooms! I was disappointed with the room we were allocated, it was very small and seemed dark. I realise this is probably because we are used to staying in open plan apartments, not smaller hotel rooms. Fridge in the room which was a bonus as I had been told they're not always given in hotels. Rooms at the back of the hotel overlook the pool area, not a particularly nice view as a few concrete buildings around (backs of shops/apartments etc from street behind hotel) although the sun catches the balconys nicely in late afternoon.
Pool a good size for a town centre hotel, clean and not too busy. Not many sunloungers though we never went without. Excellent pool bar with great service and nice food and drinks. Nice bar area overlooking harbour at front of hotel, good to have a few beers before going out at night here. We stayed bed and breakfast, it definitely catered for Europeans, mainly consisting of bread, jam, chocolate spread?!? There was nasty sausages and eggs for the Brits although they weren't very tasty! We only went to breakfast for a cuppa then went into town to eat.
Overall this hotel was good for what we wanted, somewhere quiet to relax by the pool, a bed to sleep in, and very central location to access local shops, bars and restaurants.
Kos Town was not what we had been led to believe. There were a few bars/pubs and one nightclub we found. As a young couple in our 20's we would have preferred a little more nightlife. The harbour area is full of 'tourist restaurants' all selling the same old naff food. It is definitely worth venturing into the back streets to find authentic, traditional Greek restaurants. The best place we ate without doubt was called Mama's Coking or Mama's kitchen. The locals eat here so you know it's good food!
All in all, I would consider staying in this hotel again although the rooms could do with modernising. I would probably not go back to Kos Town though, one week would probably be enough.

As the title of my review says, the Hotel Astron is in an ideal location to access Kos Town and its shops, nightlife, boat trips and ruins, and offers beautiful views of the harbour and castle, being right on the sea front by the harbour.
My hubby and I (an easy going, couple in our in our twenties) booked a holiday with Thomas Cook to celebrate our 2nd anniversary in early September '06 and I can honestly say, we were so pleased with our choice of hotel. The Astron is central to have easy walkable access to everywhere in Kos Town, but isn't buzzing with noise at night and was suprizingly quiet.
The hotel's interior is decorated tastefully in neutral light colours reception area and stairwells are marble-clad. For a 3 star hotel, we were really impressed with the cool, classy feel of the place.
The breakfast room and bar areas are situated at the front of the hotel, their doors opening right out onto the sea front- which meant we enjoyed each breakfast or a night time drink (a free welcome drink for each guest, too) while taking in the waterside view.
Plenty of choice was offered at breakfast, a help yourself delicious buffet of fruit juices, a choice of herbal/'ordinary' teas/coffee, cold meats and salami, cheeses, breadrolls, salad, cereals, yoghurt, honey, boiled eggs etc.
There was also a small hot breakfast selection which varied from day to day between fried/scrambled eggs, bacon, small frankfurter type sausages and mushrooms. My other half really enjoyed this being a typical British male, but I was less keen as I thought they didn't taste as good as being cooked at home! (No critisism of the hotel, in other countries other than the UK I have also thought this). Staff were helpful, their English (and other european languages) excellent and tables were always being cleaned and food being replenished.
Our en-suite room itself was very pleasant, clean and tidy, with our balcony overlooking the pool area. Obtaining extra towels etc. was not a problem, although they do ask that hotel towels are not used by the pool.
There were a a few English speaking tv channels inluding BBC World and a movie channel (free) the rest being European/Greek. Air-conditioning is extra, but we did not find we needed this, as the balcony doors provided enough of a breeze for to enable both of us unusually deep sleeps at night! An added bonus was having a fridge in the room to keep our drinks/sunlotion cool! There is an internet room downstairs in the lobby, which my other half found useful to keep upto date with relatives and let them know we'd arrived in Kos safely etc.
The pool area is clean and pleasantly surrounded with palms, sunbeds and a lawned area. There are also lilos and inflatables free for guest to use.
The woman who runs the pool snack bar became a friend of ours over the two weeks we were there: we were amazed she worked every day of the Kos holiday season (May-Oct) and still remained friendly towards her customers.
The level of service we received from staff while at the hotel was impressive. I was diagnosed with a stomach ulcer whilst on holiday (too much drinking, my own fault) and the guys at the reception, helped in letting my father in law fax and email an image of my European Health Insurance card to the reception desk, incase I needed medical advice (I did.) The night manager who also became a pal over our stay, is a cool guy who's into his sports, and will be able to find out any sports scores for you if needed. (Oh yes, hubby was pleased!)
I would definitely recommend the Astron for anyone visiting Kos Town. It makes a great base to enjoy the island, and offers clean comfortable luxury that makes it excellent value for money.... Not a bad word to say.
