What can I say? On arrival, the receptionist was reasonably friendly, and the immediate impression was of a semi-posh 1930s interior. Looking good ......
That's where the positives end! Away from the reception and bar/restaurant, The Earl has the feel of a house that needs remedial scrubbing. The dark carpets in the hotel require steam cleaning or complete renewal - they didn't look or feel particularly clean! The room wasn't any better, and I didn't want to rest personal belongings on the surfaces. The carpet in the room needed a good scrubbing, and I didn't want to walk bare-footed! There was a kettle, but the water supply was in the bathroom, next to the toilet! The bath plughole had something in it (green-ish scale?), and it certainly wasn't clean. The bathroom lock was broken, and the door could be pushed open with ease ....... NOT good for rooms with multiple guests!
During my stay, the clientele consisted of student-types. One look out of the window revealed a pile of empty booze cans, and some beer bottles, stuffed behind the Hotel facade =O (See Picture).
On departure, the receptionist was blank-faced and unfriendly .... he didn't even ask if I enjoyed my stay ... nothing! It had potential, but went very flat very quickly.
Advice: I can't recommend The Earl. I'm sure there are many worse hotels in the UK, but there are many BETTER hotels!

We stayed on business and were met by a very friendly but professional night porter who went out of his way to welcome us and let us in and out (when we ventured over the road to the local pub, which was also nice). The room was luxurious but a little cold as not many guests staying when we were there in mid March. Next day we were served by a lovely woman for breakfast and it was perfect - food was TOO good that we overstuffed ourselves completely! I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Stayed for a week on business. The room was a little dated however staff seem to be friendly and of good humour. Price was a little steep but it serves one of the best breakfasts.

We recently stayed at this hotel and i would safely say in all my travels this has been the worst experience ever.. Just avoid this hotel like the plague...
The staff were the worst I have ever met the room had no heating working at all and was dirty, damp and outdated.
I could go on but it would take too long just avoid this nightmare...

I wasn't sure about this place after seeing some of the reviews, but having to go to Doncaster to do some family tree research and not having a vehicle, I was looking for a decent place in the city that was convenient for walking and the city buses.
The lobby was in need of a bit of a sweep (which was done the next day), but the room and hallways were spotless. I tried going across the street to the pub for dinner, but the smoke turned me off so much that I decided to go back to the hotel. And I'm glad I did! There were only 4 or 5 choices, but they all looked great, and even the vegetarian choice was a lot more inventive and tasty than I've gotten in London.
The staff are wonderful, and the wireless Internet is free! Breakfast was huge and tasty.
A bit noisy because of the construction next door, but I was up at a decent hour to go to the Archives anyway. The walk into the centre of the city is only a pleasant 10 minute walk.
I look forward to returning to Doncaster and to staying at the Earl again!
