We stayed for one night in a standard room. The hotel was great and so was the room. Breakfast not so good as the coked part was not hot. Good to see that the bread was wrapped in cloth so that dirty hands do not touch the bread as people cut off a slice.
All the staff were most proffessional. From what I could see they had to work very hard and they were still polite and charming.
An excellent postion in the city. La Rochelle definately has the wow factor. It took 10 minutes slow walk to get to the heart of Vieux Port.
The next day we went to Ile de Re which was magnificent. Do go to St Martins and either hire a bike or sit and people watch.
We plan to return to La Rochelle for a weekend break and would certainly stay at the Novotel again.

My wife and I stayed here three nights as part of a French touring holiday and chose it because of previous reports. We were not disappointed. The location is very convenient just 10 minutes walk from the harbour area but in a quiet location with free and plentiful parking-a real bonus in La Rochelle.Standard rooms are spotless and very well equipped.Reception staff are really fantastic-very friendly and efficient. Our only complaint involved breakfast.Coming down at a tourist time of 9 a.m.we found the buffet had been demolished by business people who make up the majority of the guests and the staff were slow to replace things.Overall,an excellent place to stay.

Generally this is a very good pleasant hotel 10 minute walk from the town centre. We enjoyed staying there and the room service breakfast was phenomenal.
There is only one downside; as the hotel is situated in a parkland area which is pleasant during the day, coming back at night can be quite scary particularly if you are a lone female traveller and is it very isolated and quiet.
La Rochelle appears very safe as we saw a number of people leaving there cars with the engines running with keys still in the ignition, so it is probably ok but my wife was worried about security for lone female travellers.

If you're planning on driving to La Rochelle I would definitely recommend this hotel. It's reasonably easy to get to and there is a large free car park outside the hotel. The hotel is only a 10 minute walk from the centre and quay where all the shops, bars and restaurants are located. Quite expensive (about £100 per night) but the room was modern and clean. Don't bother with breakfast as there are loads of places within walking distance that are better and cheaper. Also, if using Google Maps to locate this hotel, the hotel position shown on the map is incorrect. It's actually approx 200m west on the other side of the river (but still on Avenue de la Porte Neuve).
