I stayed here for five days while in town for a conference, and had a very pleasant experience. In reading some of the other reviews which are very negative, I wonder if they were staying at the same hotel, or, more likely, if this was their first experience in a European hotel. Yes, the lobby is small, and yes it was often filled with smoke - but so is every other public place in Austria. However, the hotel does have a non-smoking floor, which was great - and not something you will find everywhere.
When I checked in, my room wasn't made up, and the staff offered to give me another room, but I wanted one that was non-smoking, so I offered to wait. They made me comfortable in the lobby, and held my bags if I'd wanted to go for a walk. My room was ready in lesss than half an hour, and was extremely large (apparantly one of the larger ones in the hotel based on conversations with other colleagues staying at the hotel), and very clean. The bathroom was similarly large, and nicely equipped with a hair dryer, tub/shower and tile floor (although a couple of the tiles were cracked). The beds are typically Austrian - twin beds with duvets and feather pillows - which I found extremely comfortable. The room was very quiet, and although sleeping with the window open wasn't an option due to the street noise, the air conditionsing system worked fine.
The breakfast was amazing - and was INCLUDED in the price of the room. It was a huge buffet with an amazing variety of food, from breads, to fresh squeezed orange juice, fruit, yogurt, cereals, as well as eggs, sausages, meats and cheeses. I don't know if having the breakfast included was something our conference rate provided, but it was extremely nice to have. If it wasn't included, and I was travelling for pleasure, I might go elsewhere, but since there were a number of us staying at the same hotel, it was a pleasant and convenient way to start the days business.
When it was time to leave, the hotel staff was very gracious about arranging a taxi for us for very early the next morning, arranging for a large vehicle that could accomodate several people, as well as accepting credit cards.
Overall, I had a very pleasant experience at this hotel, and would not hesitate to stay here again.

The Hotel is a dump. 2 star hotel at the price of 5 star. Its only advantage is the location but otherwise is a terrible experience. I will never stay here again.

I read other awful opinions of English speaking people that stayed in the same hotel in the same period and I totally disagree.I have the impression to have stayed in another place !
First of all, I payed 95 euros for one room and 80 euros for the room of my teen-agers son and daughter. It is not common to get a reduction for 16 and 20 years old youngsters ! These prices seem to me very good for the location in the centre of a capital . The two rooms were brand-new, sparkling and clean comfortable. They had everything you need . There were two pillows for each people ( two pillows were in the wardrobe, closed in laundry cases ). Our room was a bit tiny, and the bathroom too. Let's say it was just enough. The other room was much more wide and the bathroom too, very big for European standard. Son and daughter didn't accept to change them, lucky naughty young people ! Shower was perfect, hairdresser too, no noise by night, little traffic in Getreidemarkt.Furniture was new, moqutte too.Too warm in the room by night, according to me, but my husband found it Ok. Children were too warm, central heating could not be off, there were 24 degrees, at home we sleep normally with 18 degrees, why not spare energy ?But it is true that when you arrive from outside, you like a little warmth, outside in those days it was windy and icy.
We didn't have breakfast at the hotel, we preferred to have a cup of hot chocolate with cream and a slice of Schwarzwaeldertorte in the Aida Konditorei nearby. Staff was helpful and nice. The girl insisted in speaking English , although I preferred to speak German, she gave me good advice concerning Vienna card, how to reach Schonbrunn by undergrond, gave me a plan of the town and a list of restaurants, showed me which was the best according to her. I booked directly at the Mercure Internet site. I advice you to do the same.

This place is out of the 1970s. From the outside to the inside, it has an old and dirty feel to it. Hotel help was unhelpful and had a bitter attitude. I assume they get paid a pittance which they take out on the customers. Lobby was relatively nasty, with crumbs of food on the incredibly worn-looking furniture. Rooms were worse than the lobby. Carpet stunk. It was incredibly difficult to shower as water went everywhere which practically caused a flood in the bathroom. The reason is the showers have a glass partition that only covers 1/2 of the shower leaving the other 1/2 totally uncovered. I didn't try the breakfast as it seemed ridiculous to spend 15 euros on a muffin and coffee. There are plenty of good eating places around outside the hotel.
I would not stay here again even if it were free.
