Smell of insecticide all day

Tiny rooms, smaller than the room i used to live in being a student... Without asking, cleaning personnel sprays a terribly smelly insecticide in your room, even if there are no insects (i prefer to keep the window closed in the evening, rather than spray half of the life in the room to death, including my own).
Breakfast is a total laugh, its the fall of French cuisine taken to the next level. My advice here, take some things to eat in the morning yourself.
Wlan available, but the signal did not reach my room just yet, but i don't mind the walk down to the lobby.
They sell postcards; when asked for stamps, they will go and get them for you at the post... for an additional rate.
On the pro side, there is a nice pool, in the evening you can admire swallows (see pictures) hunting insects over it (the ones that survived the insecticide). Also this place being one of the only options in town, the place harbours many expats.

Oh dear! On the plus side it has an excellent swimming pool which is quite a haven away from the hassle of the town, the rooms (though tiny) are clean and it has a fairly relaxed atmosphere.
That said the rooms are very expensive for what you get. The bar drinks are daylight robbery (small heineken c. £5! = c £10 per pint). The restaurant is terrible, half the menu was off when we were there, half the food we did get was simply not worth eating, we had to send a vegetarian salad back three times before the Tuna was taken off and the service is very poor. I suppose you have to remember where it is so there is not a lot of competition.
To sum up, tolerable if you are on expenses but dont encourage them by using their bar or restaurant.

I stayed at the Hotel Mercure in Nouakchott as part of a group tour to Mauritania. Outside the capital the country is fascinating, but the Hotel Mercure was a serious disappointment. Several of our group left baggage with the hotel, obtaining receipts, only to find it had been given to another group before we returned two weeks later. Anything from the bar is charged at approximately 3 times the going rate and the sterling exchange rate is abysmal making the price of a small can of Heineken or a glass of orange juice approximately £5. Additionally the staff were surly, did not offer change when it was due and entered into an argument whenever this was pointed out.
On the positive side, the hotel was clean and bright, the meals were enjoyable and it's one of the few places in the country where you can get an alcoholic drink.
