MERCURE IS ALL GOOD

I stay at the MERCURE at least 4 times a year. The staff is excellent. Most of the guys at the front desk know me by name. The food is also good. It's in the perfect location. The only thing I don't like is the rule on visitors, which a lot of hotels in Santo Domingo have the same rule of charging for visitors. I understand the hotel wants to keep a certain atmosphere like most of places. The price of visitors could come down some though. Other then that everything else is ok. i will be going back in August ni staying at the MERCURE.

To Begin With, There was no A/C and they told me that it was not going to be working for the next 2 days (temperature is usually about 80 to 98 degrees in DR ), since i was with a couple of friends that were staying at the same hotel I Decided to stay .
I was taken to my room and as soon as I went in I smell something funny, it was bad, I went to the bathroom And I notice that it was dirty so I call the desk and I’ve got no response . I went downstairs and spoke to the person at the desk and told him what was going on and asked him to send someone to clean up the bathroom, his response was and I quote “I am not going to send anyone “ I asked why and he said “for the amount of money you are paying you should not complain “ as soon as I heard that I went to the room picked up my things and left to another hotel and I have to tell you that 3 days later my friends joined me at the hotel I was staying , they said that not even once their room were made nor they had A/C.
It is sad but somebody has to say something, I choose safety and hygiene over saving a couple of dollars
I wish you don’t but if you do, please get the heck out of Mercure Comercial Sto Domingo fast before you get sick.

My First Santo Domingo

Although, it's been two years since I first stayed in the capital, I wasn't aware of this site and wanted to reflect my experience at Mercure. I don't have any major complaints about the hotel. Everything was clean and the staff was very courteous. The only caveat that I found was that they supposedly wanted you to pay for guests to come up to the room, if one hadn't listed two guests upon book the reservation. I have several friends from the area that wanted to come by and hang out so at times, I to negotiate with the front desk regarding this, as it was not stated in writing when I booked the reservation.
The hotel is situated perfectly En El Conde, in the Colonial zone. I was great to see the everyday hustle and bustle of Dominican life first hand. My girlfriend is from there so it was great to see things for myself.
The breakfast, that's included was good as well as the restaurant prepared dinner items that I took part in from time to time. This will most likely be the place that I frequent the most as it has a perfect blend of economy and location.
Very dissapointed

I stayed for a week-long business trip. I found the staff cold and disinterested and was greatly dissapointed from arrival.
The hotel promotes it self as a 4 star but it is a rough 3 star at best. The rooms are old and beg remodelling and refurnishing.
I had to request a room-change because the first one was so small I couldn’t enter the bathroom without having to move the luggage out of the way. The bathroom was so ridicuouly small and ill designed that to go in/out of the shower I had jump over the toilet. The space between it and the wall was less than a foot (about 20 cm). Needless to say there is no way to sit on it except sideways (my dignity prevented me from trying this). In the shower, I could barely fit. I am 5’8 (1.73m) and the shower head was just over my head.
After changing rooms, the furniture was about the same but at least the space was close to normal. The bathroom was better but the shower problem was the same.
One day, I forgot a gold ring (moronic I know), it wasn’t there three hours later and of course: “hotel policy… they cannot be responsible… blah, blah, blah).
Positives: Free wireless internet that worked well in the lobby and ok in the room. Location is good if you there for tourism and are interested in the old town.
Overall, the place was clean, the staff wasn’t nice and food was mediocre. I tis far from every government and business location. Installations beg improvement. I can’t believe Accor rates this as a 4 star. I know the franchise is much better than this, and elsewhere.

I stayed at the Mercure Santo Domingo for a week in early February. The hotel itself is not exactly what I would expect of a Accor hotel but I got a great deal online and heard that it was in a great location.
The hotel itself is quite old despite renovations a few years ago. The rooms (not the suites) are quite small, are relatively clean, have cable TV, A/C and just the basic necessities including a small fridge.
The hotel restaurant was really good. The food was excellent but it was difficult to nab one of the 3 patio tables in front of the restaurant...though if you got one it would be a perfect place to have a Presidente and people watch but be prepared to be hassled by all the vendors and shoe shine boys.
The best part of this hotel is its location. Its right on El Conde, just steps away from numerous tourist attractions including the Catedral Primada de Am?rica, Calle Las Damas, Parque Independencia, restaurants and shopping. BUT keep in mind that because it is in the heart of all the action on El Conde, you get A LOT of noise as well. There is a disco right across the street from the hotel and if you're a light sleeper, the music can keep you up until midnight on the weekdays and 2am on weekends.
I also wanted to quickly mention the outstanding service of Santos at the front desk. I found, like previous reviews of this hotel on this site, that most of the hotel staff were indifferent and sometimes difficult to deal with but Santos was incredible! He always went out of his way for me and greeted me with a smile every day despite how busy he was.
When I make it to Santo Domingo again, I would check out the Coco Boutique Hotel (see review on that) or the Sofitel (another Accor Hotel). The Mercure would probably be a 3rd for 4th choice accomodation wise but if you find a great deal online, it may be worth it if its your first trip to SD and you're only staying a few nights.
Happy travelling!
