Very weird - Not impressed

I just wanted to add my 2 stars.
I usually don't stay at places like The Mercure, but I was given a night at this hotel as a present, and I thought it might be fun to take a friend. I was wrong.
We were greeted very pleasantly at check in, and we settled in nicely, although the whole place - rooms, corridoors, everything - is small, narrow, and decorated prison grey.
Room service should only be ordered in cases of hunger emergency, because unless you enjoy soggy truck stop food, you may be sorely disappointed.
But that's by the by. We were not expecting haute cuisine, nor sumptuous decor.
At about 10 o'clock, there was a knock on the door. There was a waiter standing there, who asked me if I ordered some bottles of chapagne. I replied that we had not. His response was baffling.
He said that the room next door to ours had ordered the champagne, but he heard us in our room "having fun" and that he thought it might actually be for us.
At that point, I stuck my head around the door, there was no trolley or tray, and he was standing there empty handed.
When I had shut the door, my friend explained to me that that was the hotel managements subtle way of telling us to be quiet.
I am still upset by this. Yes, my friend and I were talking and laughing, and we may not have realised we were loud enough to disturb our neighbours. But there is a simple and polite way to tell us this.
The next morning at quarter past 9, there is a knock on the door, and then the door opened. Someone was trying to get in to clean the room.
Half an hour later, another knock. Mind you, checkout is at 11am, and we had every right to be there.
At 10 minutes to 11, we were on our way out the door, and there's another knock!
We could hardly believe it. It was so inappropriate.
We were almost relieved to check out, never to return again.

Stayed one night on a bed and breakfast package. The hotel is centrally located with easy access to trams to get around town. Check in was smoohtless and the room (level 6 overlooking the gardens) was smallish but very quiet. The bed was extremely comfortable and to wake up in the morning and open the curtains overlooking to the east of the city and the MCG was superb. No ugly buildings obstructing the view and sunshine.
Breakfast was great, plenty of choice and the hot food was hot, not warm and soggy.
No pool or spa facilities on-site but location made up for such.
Very friendly staff, no problems in obtaining help when required.

My husband and I recently visited Melbourne ( our 4th visit ) and stayed at the Mecure Hotel Spring street. We were pleasantly surprised by its location close to the MCG and to the theatres. We particularly appreciated the quietness. Previously we had stayed at an inner city hotel and had disrupted sleep brought on by the noise emanating from the various pubs and clubs below. The room was comfortable and we appreciated breakfast in a room overlooking gardens. We will visit Melbourne again and look forward to a stay at the same hotel.
Staff and location great but room very disappointing

Hotel was easy to find and in a great location.
We arrived very late and the night porter was extremely friendly and helpful despite the late hour. Other staff throughout our stay were also very helpful. They were all cheerful, which makes a pleasant change.
The public areas all look great and loved the idea of having a gorgeous smelling candle in the reception area.
Problems start when you get in the room.
Positives:
+Comfy bed with good quality bedlinen
+Good selection of complimentary tea/coffee etc
+Excellent storage space
Negatives:
-Small bed
-Small room
-Small bathroom
-No bedside table on one side of the bed
-Limited space between bed and desk
-Carpet needs replacing
-Furniture needs updating as tired and outdated
-Charge to use safe
-No shower gel, just soap
-No opening window-realise that for health and safety, it can't fully open but being able to open it slightly would have been good
-Bathroom extremely old and tired - very disappointing. In desperate need of an update. Strange toilet position with all metal piping exposed. Water ran very slowly from shower, so made washing my hair a mission. Bath/shower seemed dirty but this was probably due to it's age
-Could hear everything in the corridor. Despite having a 'do not disturb' sign on the door, you still get disturbed by all antics in the corridor including the mini bar replenisher, who knocked on all doors along our corridor (not ours though) and shouted 'mini bar', which drove us mad after a while. Both mornings this happened and although it wasn't particularly early (10am ish), it was still irritating and disturbed us. Surely this job could wait until a little later or could be done more quietly
This is one of the cheaper hotels in Melbourne and you do tend to get what you pay for but the hotels website does talk the hotel up and I think this is slightly misleading.
I've stayed at other Mercure Hotels in Europe and the standard of the rooms has been far better, so I certainly wouldn't rule others Mercures out but I won't be returning to the Mercure Melbourne.

Reasonable traveller's hotel

Reasonable hotel set across the road from a large park in the centre of the city. Room was neat and tidy. Handu for short stays in the city.
