A gem in an otherwise dull city

I stayed at the mercure congress for 4 nights in May this year and was very happy with my stay.
The stay was booked through my work (for a research trip to the volklinger steel works, which is amazing by the way and only 10 mins away by car) so I was understandably a bit apprehensive but was pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness of the hotel and size of my room. The continental breakfast was very good, as was the service from the staff. The hotel car park was full up the night we arrived (not surprising, it holds about 5 cars!), but the girl on the desk arranged for us to use the conference centre car park next door for no extra charge. Because the hotel is next to the conference centre it's very businessy, and all the other guests were wearing suit-and-ties but it is right in the city centre so there are a few decent bars and restaurants withing walking distance.
We travelled with a german speaker so it was a bit like experiencing germany by proxy, but even I could see how dull a city saarbrucken is. Put it this way: I won't be visiting there again if I'm paying!

The Mecure Kongress is shown on the web site as a 3 star hotel but I think it is actually a 4 star . Room and restuarant were excellent as were the staff .
The hotel is about 10 minutes walk downhill ( gentle slope ) from the railway station . I'm 63 and found the walk back to the station quite easy .
Definately recommend .
