Great for central Basle

Great location in central Basle. Can walk to most places. I was given a public transport ticket when I checked in to use while staying in the city. I used it to get back to the airport (30-40 mins)
Rooms were good size, nice and clean. I had a room at the front which was quite noisy due to the trams running outside.
Bar was quite small and didn't get busy at all. The barman was not that friendly, but it was ok for a drink or two. Breakfast room ok, with normal breakfast options.
For the price, I would stay there again.

My husband, myself and one year old son stayed at the this hotel for two nights in a junior suite. We decided to upgrade to this room, since we have stayed at Mercures before and know their rooms run a bit small and with a running and climbing one year old we need the extra space. The room was beautiful. Quite large. The room was nicely decorated, big king size bed, one half bathroom and one full bathroom with shower/tub combo. Large writing desk, small fan(never saw this before in Europe), small mini bar under the television and a large balcony with two tables and chairs. We were on the 6th floor, which is their business floor. I think our room was 628, which was close to the lifts. Staff were very friendly and helpful. They gave us a free city map and were able to help us with finding various places. After we saw the room for the first time they asked us if we were alright with the room. Which i was impressed that they cared to ask and seemed to care. Upon check in, each guest receives a free transit card to use on the trams in Basel. This is great. A few meters from the hotel is a tram stop, which you can take all over the city. Most tram lines are disabled and baby pram/stroller friendly. Same with buses.
The location of the hotel is great. Just one stop down to Claraplatz (lots of shops, starbucks, etc) or a 5 minute walk. You can walk to the Rhine in 10 minutes.
Breakfast isn't included in the rate of the room. i think they charged us around 20 CHFper person. If the company is paying for this, then it's fine, but if you are, then i would just go to a cafe down the street. It's not worth the price. They have croissants, breads, jams, sliced meats, cheeses, some cooked eggs, bacon, grilled tomatoes and yoghurt. My husband enjoyed the fresh fruit, especially the figs. They have baby chairs/high chairs in their restaurant. During the day in the lobby they have free flow orange juice, apples and lackerli ( chewier gingerbread that is a speciality of Basel-nice touch!)
They have parking in the basement. I think they charge around 25 CHF a day. They have a separate area for women to park, which is closer to the lift.
They have internet access in the rooms, but if you didn't bring a computer with you, they have a computer with internet access free of charge in the lobby.
There is a supermarket next door to the hotel. A few cafes nearby.
CONS
-no air conditioning in the hotel. They have a fan ventilation/central heating. Windows are locked and can't open. Can only open doors to terrace.
-bathroom light switches were these circular switches and hard to operate. You had to have the red testing switch pushed out to operate, or it wouldn't work.
-hotel has pay movies.
-the lift from the car park to the front desk is a bit rickety and small.
-no one asks to help you with your luggage.
-they allow smoking in their lobby. Luckily, no one was smoking there when we were there. Bar can be a bit smoky.
We were very comfortable staying here and would stay here again if we were in Basel.

Great hotel, ten minutes from the Rhin river by walk it´s in Klarastrasse a street with shops and many trams that takes you straight to railway station and any place in Basel. The hotel was reaaally clean, with smoking and no-smoking rooms. The views are not very nice but the staff service is really great. The gave us (we were four people travelling so we booked to rooms) a free tram pass for the three days we stayed in the hotel so we hadn´t any problem to move around the city.
The rooms are great, nice, comfortable and clean, with roomy bathrooms. They also provide facilities to make a cup of coffee or tea which is a nice detail. The girls at the receptions were very kind and they made us a tour around the city.
We really enjoyed our staying there and highly recommend it.

Do Not Stay Here!

I stayed here during the ArtBasel art fair for nearly one week. It is convenient to the convention center and the center of town. I had been told it was a decent place to stay, mostly because of location. I paid about $350 per night to stay here which was probably higher than normal because of this particular event and wealthy crowd.
My room was the size of large closet, out of date, hot, with no air-conditioning (and we had a bad heat wave while there), terrible amenities, one old and threadbare towel in the bathroom which was absolutely tiny, etc etc. AWFUL room.
The service was also pretty bad, and at best indifferent. Unsmiling, uncaring about the heat (no offers of a fan, for example) and generally not very knowledgable. I asked for help booking a train ticket to Italy and was told by a completely humorless gruff woman to go to the station. Thanks!
The public areas of the hotel were tacky and 1980s style. There must be better places to stay in Basel--friends stayed at the Ramada and Swisshotel and they were at least marginally better.
The only decent thing about this place is the breakfast which was pretty good. Otherwise I would highly recommend that you do not stay here. It's a dump.
