Typically small rooms, good for a budget

The Stresemannplatz location is near enough to the train station and Konigstrasse to be relatively convenient to most of Dusseldorf. I was able to walk to many sites in a few hour excursion. The area is not the greatest, with a lot of adult and "alternative"
The rooms are small. My colleague's single room was smaller than my first dorm room in college, with a tiny walk-in shower that he did not fit in. It reminded me of a ship's cabin on a lower level. My room was slightly larger with a tub/shower combo. The room was clean and the bedding was reasonably comfortable. My request for an iron and board took about an hour.
Service was just OK to good.
Breakfast was expansive and tasty, but 16 Euro if you don't buy it with your room. Servers were good.
Front desk staff varied from the totally apathetic to the genuinely helpful. I waited for my luggage to be delivered and for the desk staff to notify me when it arrived from the airline- only to find out it had been sitting at the front desk for 4 hours while I twiddled my thumbs in the room. They didn't seem to care.
There are better deals to be had in Dusseldorf. If you want the convenience and price, this isn't a bad spot.

We had a good experience when we stayed here for 3 nights in February. The hotel is less than a 5-minute walk from the main train station in Dusseldorf so it's a great location for traveling to other parts of the city or to other cities (Koln, Frankfurt, etc.) One thing to be aware of is the abundance of "adult entertainment" joints in the area.
The hotel itself is nice and clean. The staff is fairly friendly - allowed us to check in early when we arrived and called a taxi for us. The rooms are small, but clean and up-to-date.
Breakfast was included in the room price and was wonderful!
Would stay here again, especially given the price.

I quite liked the stay at this budget hotel. For a rate of a little over 80 EUR for single occupancy I got a decent double room, good location near the main station and Old Town and a really great breakfast.
They seem to be renovating the place as the management changed from Dorint to Accor's Mercure brand, which meant no view from my room as some facade scaffolding was in front of the windows, but the view wouldn't have been great, anyway.
A downpoint was the bad maintainance of the rooms which showed in numerous scratches on the walls and doors and some mold on the joints of the bathtub walls. Double glazed windows kept every noise out. Breakfast left nothing to be desired: eggs, bacon, sausages, waffels - you name it.

I stayed here for 3 nights with my girlfriend. It was a nice hotel in a central location. However, the hotel was under going major refurbishment, which was disturbing in the mornings. The rooms were big and the bathrooms were impressive. Dusseldorf is a recommended city break for couples. There are many cool bars and restaurants. The locals were very friendly and are not fed up with tourists (unlike other European cities). In general, a good hotel in a very friendly and interesting city.

They call this a 2-star hotel? It's better than some 4*!

I can't believe that this hotel is claimed to be a 2-star. It puts to shame the 4-star chain hotels I've stayed in around Europe (with the exception of the Grand Media in Ljubljana and Narutis in Vilnius, but those are other stories).
Perhaps something's changed during the change from a Dorint to a Mercure after the Accor takeover of Dorint, but I doubt it. More likely someone's got the star rating wrong!
During my last stay I was given a large room with separate sitting area which makes you think you're in a suite (hey, maybe I was, but I didn't pay for one) and a bath big enough for my new girlfriend and I to fool around in. What more oculd you want?
I don't usually eat in hotels, so I can't comment on the food.
Put it like this: the prices are generally only a few Euro more per night than is being asked for the Ibis at the Hbf (main railway station), one tram stop away, and you could fit at least 2 Ibis rooms into the room I stayed in at the Mercure. And it certainly put the so-called "superior room" I was given at the Novotel outside Duesseldorf to shame.
My summary? If you're staying in Duesseldorf and you're thinking of the Ibis (or something similar), don't bother. Go to Mercure Am Stresemannplatz. :-)
I'll be there again next week. ;o)
