I have stayed at this hotel on a number of occasions as it is close to the ferry terminal. It's ok but a bit basic. Just too far from the city centre to walk, so a taxi is required. It's the kind of place you would stay if on business or as in my case while waiting for the ferry. Cherbourg though, is a great little city and worth staying in for a day/night or two rather than just passing through (the kids will love "La Citie de la Mer" with the nuclear sub they can visit -Just don't tell 'em it's a museum).
I stay at the Mercure because I always make a point of arriving there a day before the direct ferry to Ireland leaves (there's one every two days).
Back to the Hotel.
The restaurant is OK but the breakfast is not great to one used to the "Full Irish". No hesitation in recommending the dinner choice.
The small bar is cosy and the staff are friendly.
Rooms are a little dated and small but thats OK with me, I don't plan on spending other than sleeping time in it. Noise from the corridors is reduced by the provision of a second door between the bedroom/bathroom and the exit to the corridors.
It is however good value for money provided you book in advance.
