Good location, but our so called luxury room was a converted meeting room with a bed that dropped from a cupboard. The bathroom was too small and it was virtually impossible to get into the shower as you had to jump the toilet. The worst thing was housekeeping banging incessantly on our door at 8.30am on Sunday morning wanting to clean. The room smelled of cigarette smoke as the airconditioning was poor. I raised all these matters with the desk but didn't get the promised response on the day or subsequently.

Well, we arrived to the American on a Saturday. After a flight, you want to get to your room & relax, right? Well apparently they had overbooked for our first night & we had to spend the night at a different hotel across the street. There was some back & forth because we really weren't too pleased. Well they definitely did right by us. We got an upgrade as well as the overbooked night comp'ed. We were upgraded to a junior suite which was absolutely beautiful. We also enjoyed breakfast there every morning which was absolutely lovely.
After all of that, though, there is no denying it, the hotel is GORGEOUS. We really loved it. The service is fantastic, the staff very friendly & helpful, and the facilities really great- the gym, the restaurant, the bar.
The location is just great, too. You walk out the door to a lot going on but we liked it because you aren't in the center of everything all the time. Really fantastic. Highly recommend!!

We thoroughly enjoyed our week long stay at the American. It can't be beat for location, right on the Leidseplein. We had a room overlooking the canal and it was perfect for us. Big picture windows that opened for a full view and a great breeze. I am sure the rooms vary in quality and size, so it would be to your benefit to book in advance (plus you get a great deal) and ask for a room with a view. Our room was large by Amsterdam standards with a nice sitting area, really comfortable bed, and small but sufficient bathroom. The housekeeping was excellent and if you put your DO NOT DISTURB sign up: they leave you alone. The hotel is booked full in the busy summer months, and as the last reviewer found out, you clearly can get stuck with a less than satisfying result if you don't plan ahead. This was our third time staying at the American, and we wouldn't stay anywhere else.

The hotel was walkable to most attractions, clean, fairly spacious and we were lucky to get a room that overlooked the canal.
Reception staff were very helpful and cheerful and indeed the breakfast staff were too. We ate the first breakfast at the hotel (quite a lot of choice) but there are many small cafes locally that serve a decent breakfast for under 10 Euros which is half the price of the hotel.
The only downside was the lighting in the room wasn't really sufficient and there was an overall smell of dusty hoovers but nothing too horrible!
I would definitely stay there again - price wise it was much better value than others that we looked at.

On arrival at The American they could not find our reservation. We were joining friends who were already checked in and after being told they had lost our booking and the hotel was full we were not very happy. We were booked out to the Park Hotel for the night and promised an upgrade for the following night in the American.
True to their word next day we were upgraded to an executive room with balcony overlokking the canal and given a gift by the General Manager.
Room was excellent and the view superb.
The best bit about the hotel is the American Bar. On a warm spring day there is nowhere better to sit outside with a drink and watch the world go by.
The location could not be better being roght on Leidesplien and surrounded by bars & restarants.
