Wow - I'm shocked by some of the reviews on this hotel. This property is billed as 4stars - in reality it's a solid 3star. It does have a GREAT location (close to the train station and on a quiet side street across from a local coffee shop & a Starbucks). However, the rooms are very tired with stains on the headboard and furniture, ragged capeting. On the flip side, it does have nice bathrooms with plenty of freebie goodies. If you can get a good rate, I would recommend it.

We stayed at the hotel right before Christmas. It was right by the train station which was perfect since we came in and left Munich by train. It's also a short walk along a nice pedestrian path to Marienplatz. The staff was very nice and our room was warm and cozy although it took a little while for the room to warm up the first night, but it was fine once it did. There is also an excellent restaurant connected to the hotel called Vinotek. Very good food and wine selection and perfect for cold evenings when you don't want to venture outside for a nice meal. We would definitely stay here again.

The Excelsior is only 100 meters from the main RR station which is good if you travel by train. There are other hotels we would have preferred closer to the Marianplatz, which is a 10 minute walk, but we couldn't get a room elsewhere. We had a very nice junior suite, room 545. This is on an interior court with no view at all but very quiet, which I had requested. The room is beautifully furnished and has a nice marble bathroom. It has air conditioning which we didn't need and rapid radiator heat, which we did. Evening turndown service, Front desk very helpful. The restaurant was fully booked every night, so we had to walk elsewhere. There are no nearby restaurants which the concierge could recommend, so we had to walk 10-15 minutes each evening. Not a big deal but not totally convenient.. The mediocre breakfast is Euros 18, expensive for what you (don't) get.

All time favorite in Munich with cozy rooms and excellent service allways.
