normal budget hotel
Guest name: LetsGoBroncos, Brisbane, Australia
Short walk from train station (300m?) and about 1 km into town. Typical Ibis budget hotel, which was fine by us. Room was clean. Staff member on check-in pulled this "What time would you like breakfast" stunt when both he and I knew breakfast was extra. Upon being quizzed about whether it was included or not he said "Does it matter, if you really would like it?". I said not to bother, but upon check out with a different staff member it popped up at 17 euro a person! They wiped it off our bill no problem. So apart from one loser member of staff it was a normal stay in a normal budget hotel.
There must be better options

It was cheap at E55, so I suppose I can't complain. The room was clean but scruffy and a bit run-down. The bed was fine. This was a wheelchair-accessible room (205) and the bathroom was large, recently refitted, and had good accessibility.
Not very central but still just about within walking (wheeling) distance of the Cathedral.
Lots of traffic noise, and no cold air available from the aircon in October, so the choice is noise or stuffiness. An inside room might be better.
They have an underground parking garage but it's small and tricky if you have a big car.
I've stayed in some excellent Ibis hotels (e.g. Regensburg), but this isn't one of them.
Not a disaster then - and it certainly looked better than the other Ibis in Aachen, judging only from the condition of the reception area - but there must be better options.

Chose it because of location, price, air conditioning, and nonsmoking rooms.
Close to train station. Can walk into old town.
Noisy street traffic, so we closed the windows and turned on the air to get the fan to block the noise. Not much cooling, but wasn't needed for temp, just to cover noise.
Truly nonsmoking room. Very clean.
Bed had foam mattress on platform that slept fine.
Small room and tiny bathroom, but functional.
Borrowed hair dryer from desk.
Staff was friendly and helpful.
Took tea up to room from bar.
We didn't eat the breakfast or light food available from bar.
All in all a decent budget motel with no extras.

I was quite impressed with this hotel, especially considering the price.
First the bad: not a central "historical" location at all. I was only in Aachen to see the cathedral, and that was about seven minutes away by taxi, (definitely not within walking distance of the "old quarter") as a reference for you.
Now the good: the single room I had included a queen size bed (the only one I had over 25 days in Europe sleeping in single rooms), which was quite a blessing after sleeping in tiny twins the whole trip. The room was a very nice size, comparable to any "normal" hotel in the U.S. Included a bathroom, with a shower. (Just make sure you flip the "bathroom heater switch" before using the shower, to get hot water!) Of course, towels and clean sheets were also provided.
The hotel itself is only about a five minute walk from the main train station, but make sure have /detailed/ instructions before attempting it. While it is "just down the street," it can be a little confusing if you don't know what you're looking for. Everything in the hotel was clean and of a professional appearance. The staff was very cheerful and helpful.
I would definitely stay in an Ibis hotel again, and indeed wish I had known how nice they were before I booked nights at other hotels and hostels throughout Germany!
