An Ibis is an Ibis and you get what you pay for and this one is no different. However, it does come with unwelcome extras!
There is no doubt that the location of this hotel is superb for exploring La Rochelle's old town and port. It is minutes walk from every good restaurant and staggeriing distance from the bars and clubs. All of this makes it a fantastic budget hotel.
On the other hand, it is also the local meeting point for the many homeless alcoholics and young travellers with their MANY MANY dogs that La Rochelle strangely attracts.
For example, our view was of a lovely old street with a square at the bottom where performers sang and danced all day long. But, right across the street, in the supermarket doorway, slept an old woman with a bottle of wine for the whole 5 days we were there. It was very unpleasant.
Secondly, the underpass onto which the hotels' front door opens smells STRONGLY of urine (human and animal I think) all the time and it sometimes lingers in the foyer and stairwell, too. Why can't the Ibis slosh it down with bleach each day to avoid this?
Finally, one day (11am) my husband found himself face to face with an elderly alcoholic, standing with her trousers and pants down and leaning against a wall, peeing IN THE STREET right outside the hotel.
This is definitely NOT a hotel we'll return to and I wouldn't reccommend taking children to it either.

This is a pleasant budget hotel with wonderful helpful staff. It is beside the port and near lots of exellent restaurants and bars.
Breakfast is excellent.
Parking is a problem-the hotel has none. There are several expensive car parks near by, but if walking is not a problem, there is ample free parking on side streets about 1 kilometer distant.
The hotel has only one lift.
Fortunetely, the bedrooms have AC as it can get very warm at night.
we spent 3 nights there-it is a really nice place and the price is right!
