The location of this hotel is its good point. It is within the Cologne main train station and has an excellent view of the cathedral. There are tons of shops and restaurants right there. There is a Starbucks next door to their external entrance and just about anything else you'd want. As mentioned by other travelers, even though it is in the same building as the train station, I did not hear any of the noise from the trains at all.
The rooms are basic and the decor is too and that's all fine. The size of the room is probably a little above average for Europe.
The bad thing was that when I checked in to my room, I was greeted with a room that had not been cleaned and in fact the bed was FULL of long hair. Lots of it, as one would find in a hair salon. I called to the desk and the clerk there immediately came to my room to see its condition and promptly put me in another room. That room appeared to be fine but I was rather creeped out after that. I was already going to be moving to another city in two nights so I was ok to continue to stay there. However, other than promptly moving me to another room, there was no mention of their "15 minute guarantee" they offer on customer satisfaction and I was not offered any free breakfast, wifi or anything to make up for the disgusting condition of the bed. I didn't press for any compensation myself because I was exhausted from travel and wasn't really looking for a fight.
Ibis is kind of the Motel 6 of Europe anyway so it's not like I was expecting the Ritz, but this hotel was not cheap and one is clearly paying for the location which IS excellent. Still, it doesn't take a lot to make sure the room is clean.
I'm not to hip to the idea of booking there again. This was my second stay at an Ibis hotel

Very basic/Travelodge like, (as all Ibis's are) but it was very reasonably priced for it's location and views.
It is located above the main train station in the city but you cannot hear any noise.
My room had a view of the beautiful Dom cathedral and was a 4 or 5 minute walk from the shopping high street which had many nice shops. Also the Rhine was very close, only a 5 minute walk to the banks of this beautiful river.
The staff were also very helpful when we asked where they recommended for eating or when asked for directions. There was a computer situated in reception with free internet access and, for you coffee addicts (like my friend), Starbucks is next door to reception!
I would definately stay here again for another weekend break.

I have stayed in this hotel a number of times with my family (wife and son) en route to Germany from England. Cologne makes a great place to break your journey. The most recent was in August 2007 for a 2 night stay on our way home from a 2 week holiday on the Rhine.
The hotel is excellently sited for rail travellers with an entrance door from the staion concourse as well as the square in front. It is also a briliant location for a short break in the city. The Cathedral is opposite, beyond the cathedral the main shopping area starts and the hotel is about 5 minutes walk from the old town and the Rhine front.
The hotel is always clean, the rooms are a good size for a city centre budget hotel and the staff are always helpful and friendly. There is a breakfast room and snacks are available from the small bar. There is no restaurant but that doesn't matter as there are so many good places to eat in Cologne you won't go hungry!
All in all an excellent place to stay.

We have just returned from a two night stay at the Ibis Koeln Am Dom.
Like everyone else, we were amazed to find that it is actually IN the station - and can confirm that you would never know! The soundproofing as far as the station is concerned is superb. It's not quite so good for the large square outside - but then it is a busy and central location.
We didn't eat the breakfast in the hotel as we thought ( euros per person was a bit steep. There are literally DOZENS of places in the station to eat for between 3 and 4 euros including a good strong coffee.
Our room was VERY small - possibly the smallest room we have ever had anywhere! The bathroom was microscopic.
Having said that - it was perfectly adequate as we were only in there to shower, change and sleep.
The beds were comfortable with nice clean bedding, the bathroom was clean with a super power shower and one largish white towel of reasonable quality.
There are no tea/coffee making facilities :-(
One thing we were surprised at is that there is no loo available. There is a small bar in the foyer and we came back and had a drink in there but the only toilets are in one's own room - which is a bit of a trek.
There's a helpful left luggage room.
The view from our window was MAGNIFICENT. We asked for and got a Cathedral view room, it was AWESOME.
We would definitely stay in this hotel again as it was clean, comfortable and with a superb location. All the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful.
The shopping in Cologne is excellent and the Christmas markets are wonderful - the ambience, the smells and sounds - WUNDERBAR!

The best part about this hotel is the location. The hotel is in the train station. The hotel itself is very average. I had a small room on the 4th floor. I couldn't hear any noise. I would stay here again if the price was right.
