Well-located but would not stay there again

The hotel was chosen for me by the people I was visiting, and I would not stay there again. PLUSSES: the location is very convenient, the showers are excellent, the pillows were better than in a typical two-star French hotel, the hotel restaurant is good and reasonably priced. MINUSES: the hotel promises to take care of any problem at any time in 15 min. or less, or your stay will be free - I experienced several problems with my room and an indifferent staff who took much longer than that to help me (they each apologized for being the only one working at the time, but that is not acceptable if they claim that they will resolve any problem quickly - moreover, no offer was made for comping the room - I only didn't press the issue since I wasn't the one paying). The heat is turned on ridiculously high in the hotel, and there is no way to turn it down (the thermostat only allows you to make it even hotter) - I had to sleep with the window open and thus hear the outside noise. As part of a chain, the hotel is also much less friendly and more impersonal than other French hotels in town.

Stayed here for one night in early March 2005. It is just like every other Ibis (but then that is the point). Excellent location on the banks of the Moselle, our room, 214, had a great view of both the river and over the roof tops to the cathedral. Very friendly staff and happy aura about the place. Room was very small but considering the price and the location and the free off street parking (though this is very limited) must be one of the best deals in town.
Metz is a great city and although we only stopped to break the journey to London from Switzerland, we will definitely return for a long weekend. I suspect that the city is wealthy enough not to have to promote tourism but has some great tourist assets which compare well with other bigger names. Go here if you want to speak French and not be answered in English.
