We stayed in this hotel on our way home from the Outer Banks. It was a nice surprise! Our room looked like it was brand new. In fact, the hotel just opened 2 months ago. Very modern (high end bedding, Plasma TV), yet the high cellings, moldings and character of the orginal building have been preserved. The entire hotel was beautifully decorated in a transitional style.
Our kids were saddened that the pool had not yet opened (july 1st). However, we walked over one street to a historic street with lovely shops, a museum, nice restaurants and enjoyed our time there.
The staff was very friendly and helpful. The only negative that I can think of is that there is limited parking. However, we did not have a problem with this. They are in the process of building their own on-site parking garage. So that problem is being addressed.
For the price ($109 total), it was a great value for such a lovely property. FAR exceeds any Hampton Inn or something comparable in this price range.
I am very picky and quite a "hotel snob" after years of traveling with my job. This hotel met and exceeded my expectations!

We stayed for a night during the Memorial Day weekend with two young children. Unfortunately expedia hadn't forwarded the booking information, but the helpful desk staff handled the problem without fuss. The bell-boy was extremely friendly and helpful. The rooms were pleasant, with excellent design and good quality furnishings and were very clean. Interestingly the hotel just opened a few weeks ago after being completely refurbished and restored.
Breakfast in the stylishly decorated down-stairs restaurant was, although not cheap, excellent value for money with generous proportions and the use of excellent quality ingredients. The waiting staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The hotel is central, and is only two blocks from Winchester's restaurant strip. Unfortunately the George Washington does not have free internet access.

Spent one night at the George Washington in Winchester. Evidently only opened a couple of week prior. The hotel is excellent. Rooms aren't huge, but that's typical of a building of this age. The rennovation has restored this building to its original "grand" condition. The lobby is beautiful. The rooms are well appointed. Very nice bedding, flat screen tv, nice workspace, in room wireless (free), luxury bath, etc. The pool was not yet complete, but most probably aren't looking for that in northern VA.
All in all, I highly recommned this hotel. Fantastic location. A block from the Olde Town walkng mall, restaurants, coffee shops, etc. Many older homes and historic buildings in the surrounding neighborhoods. Its completely different than all the other hotels/motels in town. Its historic, its downtown, and its in a quality class several notches above the competition. For us, its was well worth the extra $. A hotel of this class would be significantly more expensive in most other cities/towns.

I reserved a king suite at the hotel approximately three weeks in advance. Upon arrival, I told by the front desk that they were sorry, but they had no suites available; they were all either occupied or unusable. They booked me into the smallest room they had, at what they said was a "greatly reduced rate." In actuality, it was the rate I could have booked online. Upon viewing the extremely small room, I noticed that all the other rooms on the hallway were much more spacious. (the maid was cleaning and left all the doors open). I went back down to the front desk to ask if there were any alternatives. They were unwilling to do anything, include moving me into a different room for even the next night (which was a Sunday). In the entire time that I was on the fourth floor, I only saw one other room occupied, and never heard any signs to indicate that any of the rooms were being occupied. On Sunday night, it was clear that the hotel had minimal occupants. I really felt as though the front desk had lied to me about my room.
The hotel itself is lovely, and very convenient for walking to the pedestrian area with lots of restaurants. Valet service is poor; it took 45 minutes for me to receive my car on check out day, even though no one else was checking out or valet parking at the time. At the time of my stay, the pool and spa area were still not complete.
I hope that as time passes, the George Washington will work out its service issues. I doubt that I will visit there again, however.
