This hotel is a perfect location if arriving in Oslo by train as it is only minutes from the main station. The bed could have been a bit more comfortable but the rooms were spacious and provided all the necessary accommodations. The bathroom was kind of unusual with a shower that was not divided from the rest of the bathroom was this was a minor problem only. Close location to Karl Johan's Gate as well as major bus routes which I would recommend to see the rest, and more beautiful bits, of Oslo.

Booked our room well in advance through a reputable website we have used before. Hotel was very handy next to rail and bus station. Breakfast was one of the best I have had. BUT the room I was given (229) had a courtyard outside and from the moment we arrived on Friday there was shouting outside, later this was joined by loud music. This went on till 4.30. Saturday night no shouting just a loud disco. The bed in the room was approx 4 feet from the ceiling and had to climb stars to get into it and clamber into it from the foot of the bed there was no space around it. There are other rooms around this courtyard - YOU have been warned !!!

We booked this hotel through a hotel booking website and had read the reviews on here. It seemed OK and a good price for Oslo, bearing in mind that Oslo is definitely not a cheap city!
We arrived on a Saturday afternoon by train from Stockholm and the hotel is an easy walk across the road. We checked in and were given room 701 which was on the top floor and only accessible by one lift. This room was in the attic. It had a sloping roof and tiny window and it was a bit tatty.
I have never refused a room before but went to reception to ask for another room. Without any questioning we were given another which was a suite and it was pointed out that the room we were getting is usually more expensive.
It was far better than the first room but wasn't what I would call a suite. It had a small sitting area with two chairs, plasma TV, coffee making faciliities and desk. Off this room were the bedroom and bathroom. The bathroom was in fact a shower wet room but it was clean and OK. The only problem is that it's a wet room and the floor did end up covered in water every time you showered. The bedroom was tiny with only a double bed in it. No bedside cabinets but there wouldn't have been room for them.
The breakfast was good and was constantly replenished. My only irritation here was that they don't seem to have heard of Breakfast or English Breakfast tea. Teas on offer were lemon green tea, Lady Grey and Earl Gray teas.
The area around the hotel isn't great on first glance but it's fine and it did feel safe walking around in the evening so no problems there. It is well located within walking distance of most things and the main Carl Johan's gate is only a couple of minutes walk away.
If you're planning a trip to Oslo be prepared to spend, spend, spend! It's an expensive place to eat and drink with the average price of two main courses and two drinks being around £40-£50.
A trip to Helmenkollen is well worth it. Don't book the organised trip as you can do it yourself on the underground.
This hotel is OK for the price if you get one of the better rooms but I would have been very annoyed if I'd had to keep the first room.

This is the one hotel in all my travels that has exceeded my expectations the most and I would choose to stay here everytime, holiday or business. The modern decor, facilities & comfort factor were equal to (if not better than) most 4 star hotels I've ever stayed at.
I was in Oslo for 2 nights/3 days for a business conference being held at the Radisson SAS Plaza hotel nearby. I needed accomodation that was affordable, comfortable and nearby and really didn't expect the Thon Hotel to be that fantastic having seen on the internet that it was only 2 or 3 star. One can't help feeling a bit suspicious when the room rate is also so reasonable. I guess I was expecting something like the Mercur or Ibis, which, in my experience are terribly uncomfortable and really just like staying in a shoebox-come-hospital. But I was really impressed on arriving at the Thon because it was nothing like that at all. I really loved the Thon hotel.
Unfortunately they were booked out for the 2nd night of my stay, so I had to move to the Radisson Plaza, which left me feeling a bit cold in comparison (despite it being 4 or 5 star). I could see the Thon from my hotel room the next night and wished I was still at the Thon.
The staff were also very friendly and the breakfast great. And of course, I have to mention the convenient location, right near train and bus stations, shopping centre and a short walk to everything else. This is a hotel for all and you will feel comfortable here.
