Porto was the last city that I visited in a twelve days tour Portugal. Hotel is located at historic part of the town, known as "Cais da Ribeira", in the banks of Douro River. My room (deluxe) has incredible views of river and Vila Nova de Gaia, the city located in the other bank of Douro river, where are the winery's headquarters that manufacture the famous Port's wine.
Hotel is very pleasant. Large and clean room, with big windows that provided great natural illumination all day long. Very comfortable bed. But bathroom seems aged and needs some improvements therefore some equipments (shower, tap, hair dryer) are jaded.
Very friendly and diligent staff. Good bar and average restaurant (great views, once again). No problems with breakfast (included in my rate), but is not so good if you compare with others hotels in Portugal.
There are several good restaurants few steps from hotel. I recomend Don Tonho, excellent portuguese food.
Overall, hotel is a great choice in Porto.

Great location make sure you book room with river view as it made our stay, staff all friendly and helpful, breakfast was buffet all very good and was topped up continually. Did not have dinner in hotel as there were so many good restaurants in walking distance on river front did not have a bad meal in any place and great for people watching and relaxing outdoors at lunchtime.
Went on hop/off/on bus gave good overview off city on first day, stop just up steep hill at back of hotel!! Went on rickety tram and new metro all so easy to find and use, best trip was river day trip went down by train then back by boat, well worth the money so relaxing. Taxi rank in front off hotel so no walking up steep hill, very handy. Porto takes some geting used to on first impression but really grew on us especially heritage water front. Think the position of hotel made our holiday break would not consider staying anywhere else if returning to Porto.

The Pestana Porto is a great choice for a couple on holiday. Location is perfect - right in the centre of all the tourist sights, best restaurants, etc and on the opposite bank to all the Port wine companies. Make sure that you get a river view room - fabulous view and plenty of light. Breakfasts are very good although sometimes the croissants run out by about 0945 and you wouldn't want to miss them! Be aware that this is a 4 star not a 5 star so the hotel is comfortable rather than luxurious, but the building is lovely, the staff friendly, the views fantastic, the atmosphere great and location perfect. We went to a number of recommended restaurants and the best (by some way) was Don Tonho which is just 100m from the hotel. Lunch up at the restaurant at Taylor's is also excellent, with lovely views. Do also go to the coast (if you like walking then it's a pleasant hour or so's walk along the river, otherwise get a taxi) and have a drink/lunch/dinner at a cafe such as Praia de Luz - the crashing waves and sea air of the Atlantic is a marked contrast to the calm tranquility of the river by the hotel. Have tea in the Majestic cafe in town, which is one of the classic european cafes of the 1920s, nicely restored. And there are as many churches, museums and monuments as you'd like to see if you are in to those kind of things.

The hotel is located direct at the Douro river, if you reserved choose a room with river view, it is great.
The hotel itself is located in six small houses - two blocks with three houses connected with an glass covered brigde in the first and second floor.
We booked the room thru a german travel agency which is speciallized in travels to Portugal. When arriving at the hotel (before the check-in time) it was quiet difficult to stop there, because the hotel doesn't have a loading area in front, but we had luck to find a parking place some meters away. Even arriving before the check-in time we could get a room, but there wasn't any help with the luggage.
We booked a double room with extra bed for our son. When we got in the room the extra bed was placed in the entrance so that I had to lift the suitcases over the extra bed. There was enough space near the window, but they didn't place the bed there, because most guests likes to have a look out of the windows. After complaining to the reception the bed was placed near the window and there was still place to open one of the doors to the very small balcony.
When we checked the emergency planc, it looked like we got the smalles room on this floor. Asking the reception if we were correct, we got the answer, that the other rooms are suites, but the hotel directory noted four suites for the hotel, so the recepitionis was lying to me. Telling him this he answered, that the other rooms aren't larger than our was. But an open door to a room next to ours shows us a bigger room and the lady of the housekeeping confirmed us, that our room was the smallest on the floor. So if yoou are travelling with one kid better book a suite.
With all our complains I got free access to the WiFi for 24 hours. The speed of the WiFi was moving from 0 to 11MBits like there where different WiFi bases and the connection was hopping between them. And in the evening I tried to connect again, but had no more success.
Anyway, the housekeeping was workng very good, the room was clean all the days we were there.
The other staff (breakfast room and bar) was very friendly.
The quality of the food was good, only the scramble eggs on the breakfast buffet didn't taste very good because they were prepared with olive oil.

We stayed here for the last 3 nights of our honeymoon. When we pulled up to the hotel, we were immediately thrilled...the hotel is in the best possible location in the entire city if you are a tourist- right on the Duoro in the Ribiera district, a few blocks from the bride to Gaia, where the port lodges are. We were wecomed with glasses of port and shown to our beautiful room in the main buidling with a balcony, overlooking the square and the river. Our room was big enough, with a nice bathroom and very comfortable beds. Yes, they were two twin beds pushed together...but we didn't really care about that. I know that's big for some people, but not us. The breakfast was good the one morning we went, the other mornings we had it delivered (for a small extra charge). We would ONLY stay here in Porto if we return...there is no better location in the city.
