Frankly, I thought the taxi had pulled up at the wrong hotel because the location is a bit seedy and the building is very shabby. The feeling of shabiness continued inside, with the elevators being very dirty and worn and the carpets in the corridors giving a clue to what was to await me in my room.
The rooms are extremely dated and tired and the bathroom was prehistoric, with a toilet that ran all the time and wouldn't flush. The heating (it was -6F this week!) was provided by a very ancient and very noisy heater/AC unit that was just too noisy to leave on. The bed was old and very sad looking.
I was told that the Strathallan was being renovated and, sure enough, the reception area is sheeted and under serious construction work, but a member of staff told me the rooms won't be finished until the summer! I can't understand how this place can survive until the summer because other guests I spoke to were unanimously appalled by this hotel and would never stay again.
I must admit that sometimes when I read negative reviews on this website I do wonder whether the writer is just settling a score for not getting a room upgrade or something. However, please believe that this place really is very, very dated, delapidated and scruffy. You have been warned!

Will be much nicer after the renovations, but friendly staff!

This hotel is in a great location - very easy access to downtown Rochester's attractions. The staff is very helpful and pleasant. The Grill could use some work on it's food. It's billed as a top-notch eatery, but my breakfast of Eggs Benedict had a thin, watery Hollandaise sauce, and a side of dried up potato hash. The waitress was so nice though it made up for the chef's shortcomings.
The hotel will be nice once the renovations are done. The hotel is old and needs updating - although the rooms are very nice and big, and we got a really good price.

Don't Book a Special Event Here Ever

We booked our wedding party 6 months in advance. The events coordinator assured us we would be grouped together on one or two floors and promised us a deluxe suite on one of the upper floors, as we were the bride and groom. She also promised us a special rate because we were the bride & groom. We checked back with the hotel several times because the original events coordinator quit shortly after we made our arrangements, but the new coordinator assured us everything would be as we had arranged it. She lied. Our wedding party was scattered throughout the hotel, we had a second floor room with no view, our bathroom was a cubicle, they overcharged us compared to the rate we were originally quoted, and our so-called bridal suite did not even have a full-length mirror. Complaining brought a bellhop with three newly bought mirrors to lean up against the walls. Normally not a big deal, but what was supposed to be a very special day was severely hampered by the rude, indifferent staff and their lies. Complaining to the general manager was not much help either. So, don't plan anything you care about at the Strathallan.

I'm not sure how this hotel is still in business! The way that my family and I were treated was plain rude and uncalled for. We had such a bad experience here that I feel it is my duty to warn others. First off, we were lied to on so many accounts but then in the end we were called liars. I have evidence that I did not lie because I videotaped our room and kept a copy of our receipt. The rooms were disgusting! Stained carpets, smelled, broken toilet, no table to eat at, etc. I requested a crib for our son 4 days prior to our check-in date and when we did get there at 7 p.m. there was no crib. At 8 o'clock we finally get a pack n' play for our son...which he couldn't sleep in anyway b/c he was getting bitten from God only knows what. We finally get him to bed in our bed and at 9:30 a service man come banging on our door with no intent to stop either. My husband and I had no where to eat our "4 star meal" b/c there are no tables in the rooms. So we ate on our bed! The staff was extremely rude to us and we got no apologies from anyone there. Please, take my word for it and save yourself a lot of stress...DO NOT stay at the Strathallan Hotel!!
