Just this date returned from 1 week in Beijing staying at Yanxiang hotel. I have rated this average based on the fact that the hotel is undergoing significant renovations presently which means there is NO POOL , DAY SPA or GYM. U can have massage if you want renovations are not noisy or cause to much inconvenience. The hotel is no where near centre of Beijing but with a city this size and the sprawl where is the city centre? I judge centre to be Tianamen square and hotel is a good 20mins to 1 hr depending upon traffic from there. Traffic is a nightmare and gridlocks. Breakfast 30Y not bad, staff very helpful, limited english, got them to write instructions for me caught a cab and the instructions were wrong leaving family and I in backstreets but still had fun time. It is old hotel a bit tired in the rooms which are suitable ie we had 3 beds, 1 fold up 2 singles in our room. Bathroom clean, little in the way of nearby attractions or in house activities, having said that ... subway! in lobby, starbucks around corner, market opposite near Lido motel, bank around corner so all the necessities close at hand, of course being a tourist in beijing is really just the pleasure of walking and mixing with locals which you can do. Around back of hotel near starbucks, same block as hotel, is coups bakery great food, pastries, airconditioned, great place to recharge after a day of touring open until about 10pm 7 nights. We have stayed in this hotel 4 summers in a row- one trip we were stuck in the midst of renovations and we were in an older room but more often than not the rooms are awesome, western toilets (yay!!) the lobby is gorgeous, there is (usually) a Subway Restaurant on the property, the employees are very sweet and kind, there is an outstanding (really, 2-3 floors!) market around the corner with anything you could desire to buy, plus several supermarkets which carry TONS of western products, PLUS another 5-start hotel right across the street with a STARBUCKS and other yummy western food. Oh,and the western hospital (A+ service!!) is right around the corner as well! So overall - this is a GREAT choice- we stayed "downtown" one summer and it wasn't nearly as nice! Can't say enough good things about it!
