The lobby, common area, restaurant and coffee shop are very nice; historic and clean. The room we were given, however, was small, dark and frankly, depressing. TV, desk, bed, window treatments were new and like a modern hotel, but it external conduit wiring, iron pipe sprinkler and wire-glass sash window fit the "Since 1919" description. The bathroom was a combinatin of lavendar fixtures and about 5 different color tiles. The room was clean, though. We peeked in a couple other rooms being cleaned and saw that other rooms were MUCH nicer. Make sure you look at the room before accepting it. The elevator is historic too; not for the claustrophobic. Overnight parking was free on the street. The downtown is a little run down, but seemed pretty safe. Not much to see in Cheyenne....

We had a large block of rooms for a hotel, and have stayed here in the past. This trip more than any other really hit hime the fact that it depends on the room as to the quality of the stay. The Jr suites are very nice, and the presidential suite is (wow) but the double bed single rooms are pretty small. Granted, not small to NY standards, but small for other rooms within the hotel at the same rate. The location is first rate and we would recommend this to anyone for an interesting stay.

The Plains is old, room floors creak loudly, interior doors don't fit properly, my sink was outside the bathroom near the entry door in an odd setup (not historic, just odd), loud not very effective window AC, able to hear noise from hall and room above. Staff is quite nice, lobby beautiful, onsite restaurant was awful both food and service; we had breakfast there and the service was painfully slow, nice people but understaffed, and the food was cold. The member of our group that made the reservations was told there is "onsite" parking. Their idea of onsite is 2 hr metered parking around the building, but free from about 5pm to 10am. There is also a garage 2 blks away. Our friend was quite unhappy about the parking. The hotel is convenient to the train depot. We had dinner at a restaurant there, forgot the name but great pizza, other food good too. If you like old, historic places and their little wierdness, this is for you; if not, keep looking. Our rate was $90+.

We reserved two rooms at this hotel in February 2008 using the hotel's internet site. We were planning a two-week trip to Yellowstone and needed a place to stay on the long trip home with our four small children. I called the hotel during a brief period when we had cell coverage while driving through rural Wyoming to confirm the reservation a few hours before we planned to arrive. After the phone rang about 10 times, I was told that I needed to call back in five minutes since there were guests waiting at the front desk and they couldn't check my reservation at that time. My husband noted this was an ominous sign and he was right. When I called back a second time, the person answering the phone could not find our reservation and said the hotel was full for that evening. I provided the internet confirmation number from our February reservation and asked how the reservation could be lost. She said that she personally did not work at the hotel in February so she had no idea why the reservation was not available. In addition, she said that internet reservations were not considered confirmed by the hotel (I do not know what she meant by this - it does not make sense for their web site to allow reservations to be made if they will not be honored). I asked to speak to her manager who said the reservation could not be found and offerred to give me the telephone number of another local hotel. At no point did any employee express any regret over the loss of the reservation. I was very disappointed in the level of customer service from this hotel and would be very wary of staying here since they apparently have a very poor system for making sure reservations are honored.

Historic hotel located across the street from the Old Depot and the Visitor Center (the start of the Trolley Tour). Stop and take the time to look at the details of the lobby. The people at the reception desk are very nice and they are also the ones who drive the shuttle to the parking lot. The suite we had was large and had some interesting "old" touches. Since it is located in the city, you do hear traffic noise even on the 5th floor. A couple of negatives--the parking and the hot water. The parking is a few blocks away and in a dirt/gravel lot. I would not feel comfortable walking from there to the hotel at night. The hotel does provide shuttle service - use it. In the morning you will get hot water but it may take 10 to 15 minutes. The gentleman at the desk confirmed this - the pipes are old. The restaurant was fine. We at there the night we arrived but elsewhere after that. There are a couple of restaurants within walking distance of the hotel near the Old Depot.
