Great view but poor service

My husband and I stayed at the Oak Shores deluxe one bedroom apartment for 3 nights. Facilities are clean and new, the views are fantastic. But this is all we were able to appreciate of this hotel. Service is poor. Upon checking in, the gas-powered fireplace cannot be turned on due to weak batteries in the remote control. We collected the batteries from a lady at the reception as she mentioned that she was the only one in the entire hotel at that time (7 pm) and could not leave the reception unattended. Fair enough, no complains for that though the reception is a short unsheltered walk in cold winter. Following that, we realized that there is only one towel provided and asked for an extra towel. The same lady mentioned that our reservation is for one guest only. Not sure what gave her the idea or information as our hotel confirmation stated clearly that this relatively huge deluxe apartment is for my husband and myself. (I do not recall having stayed in a decent hotel providing only one towel, even for a single guest.) Again we were asked to collect the towel from her at the reception. This time we insisted that the towel is sent to our room and she agreed to do so in half an hour, but only after SLAMMING her phone. It required a second call after an hour before she finally delivered the towel to our room. Later on, we found a series of problems - the electrical blanket was not working, the underfloor heating was not working as well (not to mention there is not a single hanger in the wardrope and that the chopping board is stained with leftovers). When we reflected these to the reception, the same lady put up some naive excuses - that we would not be able to feel the heat on the flooring though heated. Finally she acknowledged that there was a problem and that maintenance will only be available the next day, and that housekeeping was off for the day and she will change the electrical blanket the next day. Considering the cold winter in Queenstown, that was not a night to remember. What was more frustrating and unacceptable was the attitude of the lady at the reception.
The next evening (after a great day out at Milford Sound), nothing was fixed. The same lady at the reception told us straight in our faces that she was not on duty in the morning and afternoon, and therefore all was not done. She agreed there and then to call maintenance to have a look at our room.
The maintenance guy (and he is good) came and agreed that the room was way too cold (given all the publicized heating system!) and asked that we follow up with the reception for a change of room. We called the reception and the only thing she said was: “I will call you back”. We lost our patience, went to the reception and insisted that we speak to the duty manager.
We met up with another lady after 40 minutes of waiting. She (was not the duty manager) mentioned that the room was unusually cold, offered that we switched to a new warm room, and also agreed that the service of the hotel is below par. Unfortunately, the heating system in the new room was also not working. I left a message with the reception (yes the same girl) and requested that she check the heating system in the new room. Two hours later after our dinner (and since), we did not hear anything from any of the staff from the hotel. We decided that there was no point switching rooms since the new room was equally bad, if not worst. What is amazing was that they even allowed us to hold on to the keys to both rooms! There was no response since then, and we gave up pursuing.
For a premium room in a relatively reputable hotel but with this kind of service, it is not worth it. Before taking up this hotel, spend some time considering other hotels along the same stretch, all offering similar views, and will most definitely give you a service not worst than this.
By the way, we are writing this comment from this same room in Oak Shores. New Zealand is an excellent holiday destination. So far in Christchurch, Mount Cook, and Dunedin, our stay has been fantastic, if not spectacular, with the exception of our stay in Oak Shores Queenstown.

The Shores apartments would rank amongst the best accomodation we have ever stayed in. They have an incredible location on the lake shore looking straight out upon the Remarkables,. We booked a deluxe apartment on a web discount rate. It was huge and beautifully presented, I could happily live in it.
