Well, I’ll start by saying (1) The hotel isn’t all that bad, and (2) I didn’t book it with the intention of it being a luxurious stay. I chose it for price and convenience.
Ok, so I was going up to Brisbane for the afternoon/night for a concert (Dweezil Zappa, for anyone interested. It was FANTASTIC!) and since I can no longer afford to stay in the nice hotels on Southbank, where the concert was, I chose somewhere directly across the river from Southbank, and one of these hotels is this one, Park Regis North Quay.
Firstly, I was a bit miffed to realise that the Park Regis is actually the same hotel I’d stayed in several years ago, with a different name. (Used to be Oaks North Quay) I would not have chosen this hotel had I know they were the same, but oh well. The Oaks wasn’t bad either, but I just prefer to stay in new hotels or ones I really love.
The hotel was also not as conveniently placed as I expected, but this wasn’t the fault of the hotel. It was my own faulty Brisbane CBD geographical understanding. It is sort of all on its own, standing alone right at the very end of the CBD. It is opposite the river and Southbank, and although the view is quite nice, I personally on Level 5 couldn’t really see much beside a nice high rise view in the distance and the freeway/roads outside the window.
I booked through one of the better known online discount websites (which I have done for years and never had any issues with), and when I arrived, the hotel had no record of my booking. This obviously stressed me out a bit, as I didn’t want to have to pay for another room when I’d already paid for this one. I had to traipse to an internet café about 3 blocks away (which seemed longer, carrying my heavy backpack) to print out the email confirmation of the booking (which I hadn’t brought with me stupidly, but I’d never needed it before).
When I came back, they still had no record of me, but thankfully moved people around to accommodate my booking. They said this particular online website is notorious for being good to its customers but bad to the hotels (eg., not telling them of bookings)
I noticed the light on the one of the lifts wasn’t working, and when we got up to our floor, it smelled incredibly strongly of sickly sweet toilet cleaner. Our room was ok, nice enough, just a queen bed and little TV, desk thing, mini bar (empty though, which we found a bit odd), and a CD player. On closer inspection, the CD player didn’t work, the TV was fuzzy, one light bulb in a bedside table lamp didn’t work, the other lamp wasn’t plugged in for some reason but did work when we plugged it in, and the Down button on one of the lifts out in the Level 5 foyer was stuck on upside down/backwards. Kinda amusing.
Anyway, apart from this, the bed was fine (the pillows were too high, but they all are for me. I need low pillows) and not too soft which was good. The CD player and TV we didn’t use anyway, but if we’d wanted to, their non-functionality would have been very annoying. (when we were checking in, a guy was complaining about a water leak and the room being full of water and the reception people were trying to swap his room)
The bathroom was ok, but I personally don’t like the set up it had of the shower having a window in it. It makes it very blindingly bright and really loud, even when closed, from the traffic noise outside. There are no blinds or shutters obviously on this window. Also, there was a little bottle of shampoo and one of moisturiser but none of conditioner. We found that a bit strange.
One other thing we found weird was that there was a DVD player (we don’t know if it worked as we had no DVDs to play), which looked nice, but the kettle was a really cheap white one that didn’t turn itself off when boiled. It would just keep boiling into oblivion. I find it weird that they can have things like CD and DVD players, and yet have such an old plastic kettle! A nice looking but cheap stainless steel kettle wouldn’t cost too much, you know?
Also it was annoying as when we wanted coffee or something, we had to fill up the kettle in the bathroom sink, and it was too big so we couldn’t get much water in there.
The only other thing was that the traffic noise was quite loud, but it wasn’t THAT bad. I’ve heard much worse. Another thing that didn’t occur this time as we were facing south instead of west, but if you get a west facing room (facing directly towards Southbank/the river), close your blinds!!! The last time we faced this direction and the afternoon sun heated up the room so we came back later in the evening to an absolute SAUNA!
So…basically, a basic 3.5 star studio room it was. Don’t expect much really, but it’s not hideous or uncomfortable. I am a bit of a hotel snob and have never stayed in anything less than 4 stars, but I have to say, in most instances, the 4 star places I’ve been in have been a BIG step up from this 3.5 star one.
The location is great if you want to be near Roma Street Station, but otherwise I’d recommend being a bit closer to Central Station or sort of along further towards the city.
So yes. I wouldn’t stay here again, but if I HAD to, it wouldn’t be the absolute end of the world.

I stayed in this hotel as other hotels in Brisbane I would normally stay in were booked out. The hotel claims to be 3.5-4.5 star but would be more accuratley rated as a 2 star.
Although relatively clean the room was old and hadn't had anything done to it (including repairs) since it was built about 20 years ago. The sofa was broken and the TV didn't work. When I complained to reception they didn't particularly care and I was told that the hotel was due for refurbishment however I pointed out that demolition may be more appropriate.
I would not reccommend staying here ad there are many better hotels in Brisbane with a 3.5 - 4 star rating. This may change once they have refurbished the place as the property seems to have been neglected for a number of years.
