I chose this hotel as I had never been to South Dublin and was pleasantly surprised by its location in peaceful grounds near to Dundrum centre. As it is a conference centre for the Irish Management Institute it is clean, well run and great value for Dublin.
Dublin city centre is 40/45 minutes away. 15 minute walk to the Luas and 25-30 minutes to St Stephens Green. Its also at the end of the M50 ring road so is ideal for those travelling by car and wanting to "park & ride" into Dublin.
For those wanting hotel type facilities, there is no catering apart from a continental style breakfast in the morning. Restaurants and bars are in Dundrum centre close to the Luas.
I would use this hotel again if I was on a touring holiday but for those on a quick trip to see Dublin the distance from the centre would likely be too much.

Very nice room but WAY too far out if you don't drive. They advertise as being only 15 minutes away from Dublin on public transport (the LUAS electric trams) which is correct, but they don't tell you it takes 20 minutes to walk to the tram and 30 minutes back (as it is uphill). I was told by the receptionist it is a 15-20 minute walk.
I was disappointed as on my last day my flight was not until 7 pm and I asked for somewhere to store my luggage. The residence campus is HUGE and I cannot believe they did not have even one room for luggage storage.

Stayed at IMI Residence for one night in June 2007, was an ideal location as we needed a location convenient for Marlay Park (The Who) that night.
Not within walking distance for Marlay Park, but a short tax ride.
Hotel rooms very new, nicely decorated and immaculately clean.
No bar in hotel but beer/wine can be purchased at reception.
Only breakfast on offer is Continental, but had no complaints with this either.
Staff very helpful and obliging.
Would definitely stay there again if going to an event in Marlay Park again.

I have stayed at this hotel three times now, in August 2005, April 2006 and September 2006, and each time I am never short of impressed at the consistently high standards offered by the hotel.
It is a nice way out the centre in the middle of a residential area in Dundum, and has very peaceful grounds to walk around in if you wish. For some it may be a little far out but it is not that difficult to get into the centre if you like peace, quiet and solitude as well as ease of access to the centre. A 10-15 minute walk down the road is the Dundrum town centre which has everything you need for a last minute call, and also the Ballally tram stop which takes you straight into the city within 15 minutes.
Staff are exceptionally friendly and knowledgable about the surrounding area, and having had numerous visits I feel they speak to you on friendly terms rather than simply using professional airs and graces - everything seems natural and the staff seem happy in their positions. The hotel rooms themselves are very pleasant and comfortable, with a unique air to them that suggests something different than the usual tourist hotels clustered in the city centre. Hence why it is perfect for someone like me who likes to be away from all the noise but also not too far out from it. Also somewhere close to most of the rooms are water carriers that give out free cups of cold or room temperature water, which I found a nice touch since the tap water is not the nicest choice.
The hotel itself is usually quiet also (except perhaps when conferences or business events are running), and there aren't lots of screaming kids around or endless crowds of people. For this reason, it can be nice to sit in the reception in the evening (where free tea and coffee facilities are provided.) Breakfast is a very pleasant affair, and each time I go there seem to be more choices added. Last time there was the usual array of toast, cheese, ham, jams, croissants and cereal, as well as sweet pastries and a wider selection of extras such as yoghurts.
The gym is also pleasant, it is only small but never gets crowded, and has a TV in there so it nice to have a quiet workout in the evenings before settling down. There is no pool but a pool would seem out of place in this quiet, country-esque hotel. This is also what I like about it so much; it feels like you're actually feeling what it's like to live in the country rather than just being a 'traveller', as you are in a residential estate as opposed to the commercial nature of the centre.
Overall I simply adore this hotel, each time I am there it feels like home and is always clean and comfortable; nothing seems too much trouble and the staff always seem to go some way to making amends if something is bothering you. Definitely recommended if you are looking for a quiet retreat that isn't somewhere that has nothing to do!

Stayed here for a over a week recently and it suited very well I would commend it highly for space, comfort and well thought out amenities (breakfast, newspapers, internet access) - ideal for anyone needing to be south side Dublin on business etc - and very good value in that sort of context BUT would be skeptical of its suitability to tourists hoping to see something of Dublin life or anyone without a car as it really is quite a trek to the nearest public transport, and the grounds, though large and gracious, are not particularly well lit if you have to walk thorugh them to the residences alone at night.
However - if you have a car, and you know where you are going, it is absolutley ideal, and the staff are great - very relaxed, they let you get on with it while providing a warm backdrop should you need anything. Decor was snazy, if a little tired in some respects, and but great bathroom and showers and the bed was extremely comfortable.
One little thing that I thought irritating... I was told on checking out that there was actually a daily charge for use of the in-room safe - i have never come across this before in hotels I've stayed in, and the fact of the charge was not indicated anywhere in the room. I made that point and was let pass, but I thought it was rather unnescessary to introduce a charge like this, and simply wrong not to let users of the safe know this clearly through signs on the safe. Overall, a silly note for a good facility to let itself down on.
