The Commonwealth is in a nice location in Richmond if you need to spend some time at the state library. Otherwise, there doesn't seem to be much around. I had to order dinner from a Thai restaurant because I didn't want to eat in the nearly-empty hotel restaurant and I couldn't find any place to go on a Friday night. After the rush hour, the streets were deserted.
My bed was comfy, but the air conditioning didn't work well. I know this is not the cleaning staff's fault, but I found smushed, used cigarette butts in the yellow pages. The staff was pleasant, however, and I had a good breakfast with excellent coffee and excellent service at the hotel's restaurant. And even though there were lots of people in the hotel because of a bike race the next morning, it was very quiet.
I would recommend this hotel, but I do have concerns.

Not at all impressed with our room at all, and more so the cost for parking. Very disappointed.

Having seen the mixed reviews, I had my doubts but they were quickly squashed when we arrived. Very attentive receptionist on arrival. The room was spacious and very clean, as was the bathroom. Lousy view, but let's face it, we WERE there to sightsee and were not spending the day in there!!
The breakfast was what you made of it -- we were perfectly happy with the continental choice. The breakfast bar was a little crowded the first morning, but when everything was placed on larger tables the next morning, it was fine.
All in all, we would definately stay there again if we were in Richmond. The e-mail thanking us for staying there was a lovely touch. Great hotel +++

The other reviews are right - the rooms are huge. the beds are huge (you could sleep 4 or 5 if you're into that sort of thing). the bathrooms are huge.
The location is fine - v. easy to find, next to the state capitol, but not all rooms will have a view of it. You may get a brick wall, like I did.
The staff are very friendly and helpful, the only negatives are:
- limited breakfast options
- it's not the most exciting part of Richmond
Get on the bus and hop over to the west side - around and past Virginia Commonwealth University is a fabulous area full of artists, students and musicians.
Downtown Richmond is kind of dead, but this hotel is a great base to explore a fabulous little city.

This hotel has a great location, if you are interested in being near the Capitol, and a couple of excellent restaurants. However our $149 handicapped accessible suite was shabby, dirty and totally without any view except of a dirty interior rooftop. The staff at the desk was pleasant, but seemed focused on their own issues.
The carpets were not only dirty, they were paint stained along the edges. The closet appeared to never have been vacuumed and the walls of the suite were barren of pictures.. Several of the lamps and light fixtures did not work. On a 10 day trip, this was by far the most expensive room, and the most disappointing.
Having seen several promotional offers for much cheaper rooms in this hotel, the only handicappred accessible available was this expensive suite, even though the hotel appeared to be mostly unoccupied the night we were there.
The restaurant at breakfast time was run by one person who was cooking and waiting tables. Service was very slow and the over priced for the service and food provided.
