Having read several reviews about this hotel , I was very concerned as to what the Hotel was like, so I phoned and asked the receptionist- Ashley- and although I think she was thrown by someone asking her this question she completely put my mind at rest, assured me that we had a newly re- furbished room - which we did, overlooking the Green, and that 'everything would be fine'.
Well she was correct, the staff were more than friendly, the meals were delicious, and nothing was too much trouble - even though they had a wedding on at the same time and were extremely busy.
The Hotel management and their staff are trying really hard to make this a warm, welcoming ,pleasant place to stay and they are succeeding !
Well done and thankyou for a lovely weekend stay!

Four of us decided to eat there one Saturday night.
1. We wanted to have a bar meal, but the combination of very noisy TV and screaming kids sent us to the restaurant.
2. For the pre-dinner drinks the gin and tonics were flat with not a single bubble and the dry white wine spritzer had lemonade, not soda water. This was corrected.
3. For the starters, the smoked salmon was off, the melon was a pile of ill-assorted off cuts of melon with a few barely thawed red berries and the soup looked like barrel scrapings.
4. For the main course, the monkfish was actually quite good, but the medium steak looked like a slice of roast beef that had been fried - it may have been medium at some very early stage of its cooking process.
5. We were not offered any wine or further drinks.
6. The staff did not appear to know anything about the dishes on the menu - every question had to be referred to the chef.
7. The chef (looking a bit scruffy) wandered round to a few tables - we expressed our dissatisfaction - he blamed the sous-chef (apparently from Poland) - wrong answer - he is the chef and should carry the responsibility.
8. I tried to pay with a credit card, but was told I would have to go to reception to use it.
9. There was no apology or anything off the bill for our poor meal - it's as if they didn't care in the slightest.
Establishments like this do not deserve to succeed and I feel particularly embarrassed about it being Scottish. Someone else mentioned this place being in a time warp - perhaps Basil Fawlty trained here?
Dreadful restaurant - avoid at all cost!

Stayed on business, it was very good value, clean but dated, but that didnt matter, nice swimming pool e.t.c on site but this costs £6 extra. The restauarnt was pretty average and overpriced so i advise you go looking about the town for a nicer meal. Locatuion was spot on and the town was lovely to walk about in. The staff were very friendly, and the breakfast was good. I would have no hesitations in staying here again for the price. If like me you arent that fussed by decor but more by value friendliness, amenities, cleanliness and locality, then its pretty spot on.

We have just returned from a 2 day break at the Windlestrae Hotel. The hotel is like a time warp. I am in my mid-thirties and the decor of this hotel has never been fashionable during my conscious lifetime! The carpets downstairs are a blue floral pattern. The hotel bar looks like the day room of an old peoples home.
The rooms were a little nicer than the communal areas and were quite spacious with a nice view. However, the decor again was just awful and so dated.
However, despite the dreadful aesthetics of the hotel, the staff were absolutely fantastic. I don't think I have ever come across more cheery, enthusiastic staff at a hotel. Nothing at all was too much trouble for them.
We stayed at the hotel during the Open Golf Championships and I assume that we paid a premium price because of that. However, if it really is £95 per night to stay there, then I would advise you to either save your money and get a travel lodge type place or pay the extra £10 and go to a nice international chain hotel..

Spacious hotel set in peaceful surroundings. Food was ok with the exception of receiving stale sandwiches for a lunchtime snack. Staff were friendly and helpful but generally the hotel is tired and dated. It could do with an upgrade. Rooms were very large and quiet. Didn't have time to try the swimming pool but it look good from outside. All in all, an ok hotel which is fine for a day or two break.
