This so-called best hotel in town is located behind the busy coastal road towards Zona colonial, a bit remote. You’ll be welcomed by an elegant lobby and there’s an Executive lounge on the 2nd floor with very spacious rooms. My quiet room had comfy twin beds, inroom safe, TV also with US-channels, free WIFI, small bathroom. The pool is relatively large, only the nearby heliport and the traffic noise bothered. In the evening, especially after midnight it’s hard to find a place serving drinks, so go directly to the approx. 5 driving minutes located Renaissance hotel with its casino&live stage, there you’ll definitely find night life. The breakfast buffet can be enjoyed on the terrace and is plentiful.
I wouldn’t rate this as best hotel in town.

I was robed twice!! first, somebody enter my room and robed my laptop, then they ask us for to move to another room since they dont want us to stay in that room that night and when I received the bill they charged us for "room relocation". They don't have an efficient security system. Nothing much to do at that property.

My husband and I were looking for a clean, nice place to stay and explore Santo Domingo. We got a better deal than we bargained for, I think.
The room was clean and large. The service was excellent. Our A/C didn't seem to be cooling the room to our admittedly "American" standard, so they sent a maintenance person right up (this is around 8pm) and he changed the filter, and bam - cold air!
The pool is huge - not a large shallow end, so I would not recommend it for children, although there were many families with children there, and they seemed to enjoy the steps leading into the pool. The cushions for the lounge chairs made them feel like soft beds - I could have lived by the pool. The bar service was outstanding, the food excellent. Lots of shade available if you liked, but if you wanted to land one of the permanent umbrella-like structures, you had to get there early.
The restaurant has an excellent breakfast buffet. There is a small "salsa" dancing nightclub, with excellent live music and lots of dancing. The drinks were all great. There is a smaller "lounge" bar that was empty, and the decor/atmosphere could have been better in there. Overall, the decor of the hotel was beautiful, if patched in a few places. There are large, beautiful areas to sit by the elevators with couches. There are large chairs in the breezeway that we liked to just "lay" in and sip a drink. There is a money exchange in the hotel that was open most of the time, and gave a decent rate. The gift shop is small, but has a decent range of sundries and sunblock. The hotel was very quiet when we were there. Beautiful views of the sky at night. Great for a couple's retreat.
The front desk and bell hops (?) were very nice and helpful. I have some basic Spanish skills, but they were kind enough to help me when I struggled. They even helped us order a pizza from Dominos that arrived fast and hot and just the way we ordered it - half cheese, half ham and pineapple!
There are lots of American brands and fast food - if you want to go that route.
They have a gym/workout room that was a little crowded (with machines) and some looked a little worn, but it was very usable. No great views, but a tv. I would have felt more comfortable with my husband there with me, as I was the only woman there and it was some distance from the main hotel. The tennis courts were also right there, and seemed to be nice, although I don't play.
We took a 10 minute cab ride into downtown, and that was fun. Cost - $10 each way, plus tip. Do not take offers from people on the street to give you a tour. They are nice, but have a pushy way about them, and if you do not speak excellent Spanish, you may find yourself in a situation where you don't understand how much to pay or what you are paying for. Better to do your own reasearch on the history of the area, and walk around on your own. If you do speak Spanish and want to get a taste of local life, then by all means. We bought some jewelry and cigars. I'm sure we paid more than we had to, but we were happy with the price.
We walked across the street to the Casino for some gambling one night - that was fun. Not sure if the odds are great or if everything is regulated as well as say, Vegas, but it was just a fun thing to do.
I will try to post our photos later.
It was sunny and warm the whole time, which was ideal.
The only catch is the price of food and drinks - a little high. Like $30 - 40 pp for dinner, but good food, romantic atmosphere, nice linens and china; $10 for a margarita, but they were good; $20 for a sandwich and fries, but it was good, and served by the pool - so we really didn't mind. We got a good price on the room.
I would go back again, and recommend it to our friends - without children.

This is a great hotel. I found the staff very helpful and eager to do whatever possible to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. The food was great and the rooms were clean. My experience has been so good that my wife and I stayed there in April and we will be staying there again when I am there in June.
