I travel a lot and spend about 60 nights a year in hotels around the world. And this is probably the worst hotel I have ever stayed at.
The rooms are small. As of July 2008, the air conditioning was not working and if the windows were opened, it was so noisy outside as to prevent any sleep. And early in the morning, there are the building works next door.
So you go down to breakfast. The management here have portion and cost control down to a fine art. There is very little choice - no buffet here! If you order the continental breakfast, there is no choice of yogurt - no low fat, no choice of flavour..... you are given whatever the server brings you. And ... wait for it... the chef is unable to cook an egg!! For two days running (and I use the term advisedly...) the boiled eggs were actually raw in the middle. Now I don't know about you, but I don't want salmonella on my vacation....
And in the rooms, make sure you can manage on one tiny circle of soap between two of you; and don't throw away the shower cap as you won't get another one....
This is supposed to be a four star hotel. My very strong advice is to look elsewhere. The St Gotthard is OK - not great, but certainly much better than this.

I stayed here for three nights on business recently.
Good hotel, good staff & great location. Opposite the tram & rail stations & close to all the shops.
Rooms are a little on the tiny side but they are fine; clean & adequate.
Free apples on each floor & breakfast is great - lots of choice & staff try hard to get you what you need!
The car park is underground, very close to the hotel. Getting in & out can be ''exciting' if you have anything other than a small car. Be prepared for slow & careful parking!

When we checked in, the woman at the front desk said, "Oh, I'm so sorry, but since you are the last to check-in, we've had to give you a room with a not-very-good view." When we arrived in our room, we found that the "not-very-good view" featured the Limmat River with the pretty bridges, the majestic towers of the two old churches...and the alps!! If they'd given us what they considered a "good view," I might have had a heart attack! Excellent attentive service from all staff, a friendly bartender, and all our questions answered knowledgeably--what more can one ask for? Even the usual continental breakfast was a notch above the ordinary. The proximity to the rail station (which is usually a minus, we've found--but not in Switzerland) made it perfect. We fell in love with the town and would check into the Central in a heartbeat next time we're in Zurich.

I was in Zurich for business and stayed here for 2 nights - it is a small hotel located right beside the river and across from the main train station. The staff are friendly and efficient, the rooms are clean but they are not set up for business travellers and are tiny even for 1 person. If I was travelling to Zurich for a weekend, I would stay there again. My only gripe is that when I needed an adaptor which the hotel offers, they only had one for the whole hotel and had to bring it to my room because they didn't know which country it was for.

Excellent location on the river Limat, just a 3 minutes walk away from the train station. Zurich is a small city but still the convenience of being so close to both Banhofstrasse and the Niederdorf is definitelly a plus.
The hotel features a very nice cafe-bar that appears to be a spot for locals too, making it a very pleasant option for relaxing following a day's work or sightseeing. The basement restaurant was also very nice, with the service in particular being excellent.
Our river-facing room ( 4th flloor ) was of adequate size, with a small but well-appointed bathroom with a bathtub. The TV featured about 20 foreign channels, with an additional extended package on a pay per view basis on offer. There was a bit of noise coming through at night from the trams outside, as well as from inside the hotel itself. Nothing really disturbing though, more like the sort of noise one notices right before he goes to sleep rather than anything that would ever awake someone up. I found it rather adding in atmosphere, the occasional sound of a tram passing by at night. But some ultra-light sleepers might want to take notice.
