I?m portuguese, 46 and for the last 30 years each year i spent several long weekend (2 to 5 days) in the Algarve. I know most of the 5 star hotels in the area (some of them very very good).
For several reasons this time i try Vila Monte. Is in the Algarve but you don?t feel that. Is in the countryside, 10 Km from the see, east Algarve (less developed and less tourism) in the middle of lots of trees with nice shadows and lots of birds. It?s a small resort with very good service where you can find everything you need. There are 3 pools in three diferent areas, so the guests have lots of nice places to stay and rest. The sound is something between chill out (lots of jack jonhson) anf songs from the birds. Clean your mind and no stress at all. Perfect. I feel like my second house.
You need a car. He had lunch two of the days, good food normal price. We didn't have dinner so no experience. Good breakfast.
A very good four star. Don't expect nigthlife or lots of people
four days of paradise

Awful place, way too expensive for what you get. Definately need a car as there are no bars, restaurants or anything within walking distance and the hotel makes the most of this with expensive meals. Food is bland, tiny portions and v. expensive.
Room was tired, not altogether clean and poorly decorated. Marketed as a 4* hotel and part of what is supposed to be a good chain but can only assume the inspectors haven't been for some time.
We had no key for 4 days to our room for the front door and had the inconvenience of using the back door - we had to speak to 5 different members of staff about this as we kept being promised it would be fixed the next day as the lock had broken. However when we threatened to compain to the manager on the 4th day the key to the door was found! Apparently this was a spare key as the previous holidaymakers had taken or lost the key which made us feel really safe!!!
Also had an investation of ants in the room and lots and lots of bugs generally around the complex
Not even any info/welcome pack in the rooms

The Vila Monte is a first class hotel set in beautiful gardens only 30 minutes from Faro airport, but feels a million miles.
Our Room was spotlessly clean and simply furnished and a stylish modern bathroom; with really good quality toiletries, bathrobes and huge fluffy towels.
The grounds and gardens were very well tended with a team of gardeners working hard to maintain them.
There are two restaurants; the pool bar for simple lunches and dinner, and the main Orangrie restaurant that is in a dramatically stylish room with a delightful terrace, with views down to the sea.
The food in the pool bar was simple well-cooked local style food with great fresh fish every day. The formal restaurant’s food was of a very high standard, with local ingredients given a sophisticated twist; dishes were prepared with care, understanding and skill. Prices for both restaurants were lower than I would expect to pay in England for the equivalent quality.
The staff and management were professional, attentive but most of all friendly, nothing was too much trouble; they are a credit to the hotel.

Vila Monte in the Algarve is wonderful in all respects - the accommodations have a Moorish feeling and style, the grounds are beautiful and include a 3-hole golf course, and the dining in the Orangerie restaurant is superb (though very expensive). We were delighted with our room. The entrance was from a courtyard thus providing privacy. Inside, the clean lines of the cabinetry made it modern and the reds and whites gave it an exotic feel. The bathroom was new and squeaky clean. Our one complaint was that the light in the bedroom was poor for reading and the room itself was a bit small. Staff were very helpful with our requests for information and assistance. Vila Monte is about 20 minutes drive from Tavira - a wonderful place for seeing tiled houses, and 10 minutes from the Algarve 'island' beach of Praria de Barril, a top choice for many visitors.
