I went with my parents and sister. From the pictures on Expedia, we were expecting a slightly nicer hotel, but it wasn't too bad. We were on the 30th floor, so the views of the ocean and diamond head were spectacular. However, the booking got really screwed up. Our room was supposed to have 2 queen beds and a pull out couch, but instead they had a queen and single in the bedroom with a pull out couch in the living area. This means my parents would have to sleep with one teenager in their room, lol. The staff wasn't terribly helpful in finding us another room, so we ended up just dragging the single out into the living room so my parents could have some privacy.
Some people say the rooms are disgusting, but not really. They are extremely outdated, but relatively clean the the housekeeping staff was great at keeping things nice and making sure we had everything we needed.
There was a mention of cockroaches in another review and it should be said that you can't escape the little buggers. We only saw one in our room when it hitched a ride on a towel we had left to dry outside on the balcony. Yes I went screaming and running onto the bed because it was the largest bug I have ever seen, but they are common and my friends on the island say that you can't completely eradicate them.
They are everywhere, even in really lux housing. Get over it.
The location of the hotel is awesome. No big buildings blocking the view, and it is a short 2 minute walk to the beach. I didn;t mind how old the room looked because, let's face it, unless you're a honeymooner, you don't go to Hawaii to sit in your room. We found it perfunctory and useful for preparing breakfast and saving ourselves a bit of money. And despite what the manager keeps saying, the elevators ARE EXTREMELY SLOW. And no, most high rise hotels I have stayed at are faster than that. But over all, I enjoyed our stay and would stay again. Good deal for the money you pay.

The Wakiki Sunset was in waliking distance to the beach, zoo,
restaurants and shops. The tourist buses picked you up from almost outside the door.
The standard bedroom apartment consisted of a bedroom,lounge/kitchen and bathroom. As our kids would not share a bed we took the one with 2 single beds and a queen sofa bed. It worked out OK. It was great having the kitchen as we could have breakfast before we went out. There was also a laundry on the same floor. The rooms are a bit run down and could do with a coat of paint but overall it was comfortable and cleaned each day. It was great to have a pool and internet cafe for the kids to use.
